How in the F---!! do you remove the oil filter???

Post by mr2fan »

...from a '93 automatic by yourself without all the drama and swearing? There's just no leverage room to move with it tucked in down behind the manifold next to the dipstick. Must I have to remove the engine heat shields etc ?? It's hard enough replacing the damn dipstick after you've checked your oil level let alone trying to remove the bl--dy oil filter! ARRGGHHH!! And even if you do manage to loosen and remove it by some miracle, because it's on a 45 degree angle and sitting up, oil is just gonna pour from it all down and over the back of the motor! What a hoopla! BAD designing Toyota!

Lol it's a mission aye.

Try some good grippy gloves.
Try swearing at it... lots
Have a look at Repco/SCA. They have so many different types of oil filter removal tools now, one of them is bound to fit and not get in the way of other parts of the motor.

Not difficult - Tried adjustable pliers?
When was the last time the filter was changed?

What a friggin' palava! It must have been friggin welded on or applied by the European Wrist Wrestling Champion! FFS !

Location
If in Wellington I can come
and have a look tomorrow.
I use the four prong 1/2" drive
oil filter removal tool on a turbo
you might have to resort to jacking it up
and using the old screw driver trick
(only to be done as a last resort )

There are two ways that make it easy.

1. Get the proper tool that is like a large socket that goes on top of the filter and use the 3/8" wrench on it with an extension.

2. Get yourself one of those "Claw" universal oil filter removers that fit to a 3/8" drive on it with an extension.

The removers with a "Band" are a waste of time and I'm picking the ones with a chain are not that much better when trying to use it on the MR2 due to poor access. You do not need to remove anyting from the car with the right tools.

for the types above.

lol, I was in your position a few weeks ago when I did my first mr2 service....not fun at all

I used a long pole that was sharpened at the end and a hammer, and some more swearing helped.

count yourself lucky genIII guys! your filters are so much easier to access.

another thanks to Tronic from me for that link, I wasnt aware of the various types of tools. I didnt bother going to buy one as I thought there was only the band type which I could not see was going to help me.

its easier to change my oil filter now...I did an engine swap and its got no heat shields or AC stuff around it :D

but if its real stubborn you coud use a chisel to puncture the edge of the flat piece at the top, then drive it off with a bar and a hammer(its the quick and easy way, the posh tools are not always required)...but it shouldnt be that tight :(

if he is on about TRC, he is in the lower end of the manawatu/horowhenua area???
team red?...its just not as good...TEAM YELLOW!!!!

it was an electrical problem....the con-rod pushed the alternator off....

If you can do it on the side of the road, in the rain, in Wellington, on your way to Auckland, while the exhaust is still bloody hot, and only burn yourself once...

Then you can do it anywhere.

Gen. I oil filters FTL
I write a lot of posts, but that does not mean you will see them.

lol great thread, I feel your pain mate, swearing didn't always work for me and normaly wound up punching a grunty screw driver thru it with a hammer and undoing it that way but you need to be 100 percent confident otherwise you now how a jammbed filter with a hole in it, not so funny. the way i solved the problem was take the engine out and install a gen 4 and hey presto oil changes are a breaze.

Neither did I ! Lol

Just dug out my filter tool it's a K-D 3288 made in the USA. Basically if you buy one of these it's going to last you a lifetime or until you loose it. Still takes a bit of practice to use it in the MR2 as access is such a PITA.

http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-2505- ... -3288.aspx

Unfortunatley sooo much cheaper in the USA than NZ like everything else automotive.

With the filter done up by hand about as tight as it will go i.e 2/3 to 3/4 of a turn it will not be possible to undo it again by hand again when the time comes to get it off again without a tool.

That's the tool I was taking about bought it local (super Cheap I think)
not that expensive bit of a pig to use but gets the job done.
