What should I do with my crashed MR2?

Post by JasonFriday13 »

Some people here already know, but for those that don't know, here is the link to stuff.co.nz: https://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily- ... icle-crash.

So, I have a few options:

1. Buy another SW20 and swap most of the parts over to it.
2. Cut my losses and sell all of it.
3. Buy a Camry and swap the engine into it.

What do you think?

(I took these pictures the day after the crash).

Might help with assessing your options if we know what has been done to the car.

Oh that's terrible news. I hope you are OK.

Go check out his build thread, quite extensive work has been done to car.

I'd try reshell it if you are still keen to stay with an MR2.
Or you could go with something else. A Toyota ED 4WD has an ST205 drive train or the Camry idea is different.

Thanks for the link as I now remember the extensive build over several years. Unfortunately most of your good work won’t be able to be repurposed into a new shell. One thing that can’t be taken away is the experience in doing all the hard work. Use this knowledge to decide if you wish to go through once again with another project. That’s something we can’t put a dollar value on.

You OK Jason?

Damn shame about your car my friend.

Looking at the pic I'm guessing you got onto the grass a bit sideways and that's what flipped it?

I'm VERY glad of one thing though:

Yet again the structure around the rear window saves an MR2 driver's life during a roll-over incident. :D

I'm sure you're just as glad of that as I am mate!

I'd imagine you copped a bit of concussion though?

You ok? No permanent injuries I hope?

How it happened:

I was going around a right hand turn (had a 65 sign on it), I'm not sure how fast I was going but it felt like about 75 - 80km/h. I made it half way around the corner when the back end lost grip, the car slid sideways across the centerline, went back first into the inside of the corner. The back right of the car hit the bank on the exit of the corner and that flipped me back onto the road upside down.

First thing I did was turn off the lights and the engine, undid the seatbelt, then looked for my phone and wallet (used to be on the passenger seat). I only found my phone at the time. Not long after that, someone had stopped and asked if I was alright, and I was. I found my boots (I was not wearing boots while I was driving), then got out of the car myself, and put the boots on. Walked over to their car, I had a few scratches and a little bleeding. I asked if they could find my wallet, and they did. Then the police turned up, I gave them the details. I was alone, no other cars were involved, no insurance, and they said they would take care of the rest.

The ambulance turned up not long after, and they asked a few questions before they asked me to walk over so that they could take me to ED. Long story short, they took some blood, everything else checked out fine, but they were a little concerned about a small pain in my belly, so they did a CT scan and that came back great. I did alot of waiting though, I spent the whole afternoon in ED. Mum just happened to not be working, so she popped in after my CT scan, and took me home after I was discharged. I had something to eat, and mum was nice enough to take me back to Hawera too (where I live at the moment).

The following day (Thursday), I drove back up to New Plymouth to see about recovering my car, that was the first time I had a good look at the damage. Engine was hydro-locked, no surprise there. Because the car had been upside down, most of the oil drained out the catch can breather, the rest must have seeped past the rings. I paid the tow bill, and had it delivered to mums place, where I put it on jack stands straight away, took the wheels off, used a crow bar to bend the hood up so I could unscrew the catch, took the battery out, took the ecu out, went and bought a car cover because it's outside now, and those pictures are just before I covered it up.

Next week I plan to see if the engine still runs (I don't see why it shouldn't run), I'll drain the fluids and drop the engine and box out, shifter and cables, suspension, hubs, brakes, stereo, I might be able to save the doorcards and the seats, and possibly the instrument cluster (it's a Gen 5 Beams item). I'll probably save all the locks and the steering column too.

If (that's a big if) I was going to sell the drivetrain as a nearly complete boltin, I would probably be asking about $4500 for it. Basic specs are in my signature below.

[edit] I was also back at work on Friday, done 3 12 hour days already :)

The other issue is trying to source a mr2 for cheap, SW20's are becoming sparse[/edit]

Sorry to hear about the accident Jason, I'm really glad you are okay physically.

I'd like you to get another SW20 if possible. A minor set back for sure, however these kinds of events should never put us off, simply help us learn and to move on from that. A Camry swap wouldn't be sniffed at either though, if you wanted to go down that route. Sleepers are awesome. It actually depends on where you are in life. A 12 Second Camry Wagon could be very useful if you needed it to carry loads around quickly.

That's pretty-much exactly what I figured must have happened Jason.

Hugely glad you're ok mate...! :D

And it has to be said - if that had been a Caldina, you might not have been. That rear window structure right behind your head undoubtedly saved your life.

I do hope you can find a decent enough MR2 to transplant your gear into. If this kind of thing ever happens to me I'll be throwing the SW running gear into the AW...

I didn't do much with the car this week, I just took the plugs out and cleared the cylinders of oil. First crank and the oil shot out like a geyser, and covered most of the car, even got a little on the house too, haha. I put 2 more liters of oil in, put the plugs back in, and tried starting it. It fired up and coughed on the oil for a few seconds, then stalled. Tried a few more times until the engine idled on it's own. Nothing sounds broken, it still sounds smooth which is good. Lots of smoke though, hehe. I have to clean out the whole intake and exhaust of oil though, it's everywhere :( . Coolant was still good, it lost very little. It still came up the filler tube when you squeeze a coolant hose. It was looking brown though, so that will need a clean out too.
