Used to use mobil1 5w50 as if it was one of the Ten Commandments.
Now I use castrol magnatec 10w40 because I like the way it feels both on the car and wallet.

Re: What oil do you use?
I have always used Castrol GTX 15w40. For a new/rebuilt engine I would use Valvoline VR1 Racing 10w40.

Re: What oil do you use?
Being a NA you only require a decent 10w40 semi-synthetic oil like Castrol GTX or Valvoline (engine armour). More important to change at 5k interval along with filter.

Castrol Edge 0w30 fully syn. Too thin for my car, leaks and burns it. Will go something a little thicker next time.

Ha! My car liked to burn that too! I used it for about two or three oil changes with one or two track days in that period. I had completely forgotten I had used that oil before...Alsw20 wrote:Castrol Edge 0w30 fully syn. Too thin for my car, leaks and burns it. Will go something a little thicker next time.

Re: What oil do you use?
Hi All
I'm about to do an oil and filter change on my 1991 SW20 NA. I only drive it about once a week
What would be the best oil to put in it please. I am finding my oil light is taking about 1.5 sec to go off when starting from cold and sitting for a week at the moment and arent to happy with that.
Cheers
Ken

Re: What oil do you use?
The grade of oil you put in is dependent on how much kms your engine has seen without internal work. In general I use 20-50 for NA's above 200k kms. But 10-40 or 15-40 would be alright if under 200k kms. Of course it also depends on how hard the engine has been run in its time as well.nightz wrote:Hi All

Re: What oil do you use?
My 1991 NA takes 2-3 seconds for the light to go off, sometimes up to 5 seconds, 1994+ engines light goes off almost instantly. Since you said it gets driven once a week, a 15w40 mineral or semi-synthetic oil will do the trick. I would suggest Castrol GTX Modern Engine.

Re: What oil do you use?
For some reason, the Gen2 motor doesn't control oil flow back to the sump very well at all. More often than not, if they're left sitting for over an hour, 95% of the oil ends up back in the sump. This means that apon starting it up, the oil pump has to refill all the galleries and paths right up to the back of the head (where the pressure sender is) and build pressure.
Gen3 systems had a better control system (something to do with the drain-back valve near the pump I think) and they store a lot more oil higher up in the engine. Only time i've seen a gen3 engine with its oil light on for 2 or 3 seconds was a bone dry one after a total oil change (had been sitting for 5hrs draining after an oil flush).

Re: What oil do you use?
Yeah, don't worry about it. If it takes more than 5 seconds to go off, turn it off so the bearings don't get damaged.nightz wrote:Thanks LoganLogan wrote:The grade of oil you put in is dependent on how much kms your engine has seen without internal work. Since the engine is newer than I thought, I would probably recommend a full synthetic or sem-synthetic 10w40 oil, such as Valvoline VR1 Racing (synthetic, I use this in the turbo engine), or Castrol Magnatec (semi-synthetic).

Re: What oil do you use?
Engine Overhaul at 240k 3S-GE Gen2
Done about 22k on professional and reputable rebuild
Used 15w-40 Penrite semi synthetic with 'acceptable' oil consumption
Oil change done 2k ago with 10w-40 Penrite Full Synthetic and oil consumption is crazy. Around 750mls consumed. Admittedly hotter days and some hell thrashing on back country hill roads
Not impressed. Will be going back to 15w-40 or even 20w-50
