Four years later- Painting day arrived

Post by Benckj »

I’ve planned to shoot my 98 rev5 turbo since the day I imported it from Japan. Maintenance, mods and lack of $$ and experience with new paint products got in the way. Car has always been in decent shape but the OEN wing, front lip and aftermarket side skirts have been dressed in white satin primer that matched the original white paint. In addition the left guard was replaced in Japan with and earlier part so the clear coat gave way to the sun and it needed some love.

Those of you who have followed my car mods will know about sourcing the materials from my brother who works for PPG , USA. Off to work now so more later...... incl pics.

Almost done after several drams. On final clear coat two moths made it into my paint booth (green house) and landed on the front bumper as well as rear boot lid. Then the hardware holding wing broke which dropped center section onto a pile of pine needles just like when your toast falls off kitchen bench. Lots of work to rectify with little time to do as brother flys out the next day.

Reserving this next post for pics. Colour is white pearl with a hint of silver/bronze flake. Looks fantastic in the sun but I have my work cut out to peel off masking tape, re-assemble car, finish door jambs and wing then shoot some decent pics. Arms and hands are buggerred but will need to get on with it.

All I can say is what a marathon effort. Hats off to my brother for spending the time to sort materials, prep and shoot car. Its been an absolute mission given he was 2 days late to arrive, upteem family visits over Easter, trying to get supplies during holiday breaks (Easter & Anzac) and then leaving a day early in order to spend some time in Wltn with friends. That amounted to days prep and then shoot car. My paint booth (greenhouse) worked well apart from the lack of ventilation and space. Plan was to always shift the house sideways as required but I did not plan on other parts being spread along front & back which left virtually no room to manouver. Afrter a successful primer, bas and pearl coat we then made the decision to go for 2 clear coats that night. Turns out that was the wrong choice as we fought several issues including no visability and the moths entering and ruining several panels. Had to repair what we could the next morning but paint checkered and then spent several hours prepping and re-shooting. this occurred before he flew out at 2pm!

Below are a few pics to share but will need some time to get the final ones once car is out of booth and into sunshine.

Thanks, have yet to view in the sun as storm hitting down here. Hope to get out into open, inspect and snap a few pics. It’s really a bright white but being pearl has a iridescent shine to it.

Looking good.
Was the car always white? for some reason I thought it silver with black roof, or is that another one of yours?

I have a Silver NA and this is my 98 turbo. I imported damaged from Japan and the body was always a little rough especially the front fender, lip, side skirts and wing. Wasn't really a concern as I had plenty of maintenance & engine mods to keep me busy.

Managed to take a couple pics out in the late sunshine yesterday. Haven't wiped down or buff yet as it still have some overspray in a few areas. Looking better than I thought given some of the bug stuck in clear coat issues we had.

I wouldn't trust myself to "build" a garage..
It would be about 8 bay garaging with a gym and drinks bar set up in there.

Forgive me Jim but I couldn't help laughing. Classic description there mate. Love it. Right down to the toast landing jam side down on the floor, type thing...

Hats off to you and your brother for persevering and obtaining such a nice result. I hope you enjoy it for years to come. :D

Yea it wasn’t a bad effort for 3 days work from start to finish including stripping car and gathering the specialist products required. Real backyard job done by a professional (not me) which was quite a contrast but keeping with the MR2 theme. Hopefully it doesn’t cost me a bean.

Managed to re-shoot rear bumper as I wasn’t happy with my repair work. Came out very nice considering I’m scrapping the tins for last bit of product to use and temps have dropped which increase dry time between coats. My $15 side entry spray gun worked well which was a pleasant surprise.

More pics to come once I peel off masking tape. Let’s see if I can attach ones of product used using my iPhone.
