Unless you've dropped some Easter egg wrapper down there last weekend then I would say yes!! Your oil pressure gauge will no doubt say it's fine until it starts knocking.....

Thanks, it sounds fine at the moment but I have a new flywheel, clutch, water pump, timing belt etc to do so I guess I will be dropping the engine and send the block to the machine shop before it is irreparable.

The machine shop should be able to check the condition of the crankshaft with the sump removed and advise if it needs machining or just needs a new set of bearings which can be done without a full stripdown.

Small update, the engine was fine. Bearings, pistons etc, no problems. The metal must have been very old castings. Oh well definitely nice to know it is in good condition going forwards and more importantly no more leaking oil.... in theory.

Strange that metal has remained in pan over many kms with numerous oil changes. Good result all the same.
