SW20 - Seat belt replacement recommendations

Post by p-we »

Being a new member, I did my first search but turn up no hits:

Belts on my SW20 have failed the WOF. I'm wondering if there are aftermarket make/type recommendations. Maybe there are NOS original Toyota out there that someone knows about?

What did the seatbelts fail on? If it is because they don't retract quick enough, wind them out and spray silicone on both sides (tyre shine works too, haha) and wind them back in, out, a few times

A wrecked MR2 from Trademe is an option, and can always ask Mark from Manawatu Toyota ([email protected]) if he has any new. I can't recall off the top of my head if there's anywhere else in NZ that might sell them new. This is this option from overseas, but not sure if the cost/waiting time is that practical https://mr2heaven.com/products/seat-belt-retrofits

Toyota don't sell seatbelts unfortunately.

You can also try cleaning the belts to make them retract properly. Worked for me. Apparently there are some new rules around new belts being fitted have to be a certain type.

Thanks for the replies. I must have done something wrong as I did not see your replies last month when I went looking for them

The passenger belt failed due to a 'tear' even though not real significant. But both belts were rough and were not retracting well anymore. The tear would have been caused by getting stuck in the door due to the retraction problems. I ended up going to Seatbelts R Us in Auckland who fitted standard Toyota replacements which fit several model Toyota's. They are not NOS original but look like they came with the car.

What a difference! Its actually really nice to have new belts
