that's sad... i usually buy aforementioned Amsoil at trade price, buy sometimes buy redline at Road & Track, also lower hutt, little rival of racetech... at semi trade price. I thought redline was popular enough to be available only in welly...
well, good luck to find it!

Castrol Syntrax its like $28 a litre now and can be purchased from Repco if your branch stocks it. Pretty much any full synthetic manual tranny oil will do the job, there is noting special about Redline, Castrol is just as good.

Yes the price of it has gone through the roof. You can no longer buy it in a 4litre pack, only 1 litre packs now. My advice would be to purchase 3 litres for an oil change and pour the whole lot in. The gearbox only holds slightly more than this for a change anyway before it starts coming out the filler (I found it takes 3.2litres)Benckj wrote:I remember buying it in a 4 litre pack for about $85 a couple years back. Has it gone up that much?Castrol Syntrax its like $28 a litre now

I dont know how you can say that. there is a huge difference in oils! you cant just dump them into one lot
they are NOT all created equal

I'm getting 50,000km between changes on Syntrax with no problems. The gearbox action with Syntrax is better than a brand new Corrola I took for a drive (the new model is simply horrible, thankfully it was a rental and I could give it back).
It's more about the condition of your gearbox and actually changing the oil than anything else. If you didn't get it on a synthetic early enough in its life its too late no matter what you use now. The gearbox is a well known area of weakness in the Gen 1 anyway so it needs all the help it can get.
Also I have recently added a custom made neodydium magnet to my gearbox drain plug so that should pull out all the fine metal particals but I will not know for sure how effective it is as the next change is years away.

If you want Redline and your in Auckland I'm pretty sure I have seen it at an independant oil supplier in Hillcrest road in Glenfield opposite the big orange Ash Air building. They do the likes of Penzoil and Fuches and stuff.
IMO with a gearbox thats in good condition the difference in Syntrax and Redline will be the same as the difference between a red and a yellow MR2...its just personal taste. However I have found over the years the difference between any synthetic and a mineral oil is the same as the difference between a red MR2 and a yellow Ferrari 360.
If you have a LSD then it may be a different story, the Redline looks like it has more options to suit a LSD. Thankfully I have no LSD in my MR2.
Once you have found something that works in your car your pretty reluctant to change anyway, firstly because its a $100+ experiment and secondly you cannot get all the oil out of the box so its not going to be until the second or third change of the new oil that you can say your running solely on "one oil"
