Soft top for a Spyder
I have to get a new soft top for Dorothy (My MR-S) and I have been shopping round . Have a price of $1825 fitted for an imported one from the states.
Most others are a lot dearer around $2500-$3000.
The other option is for me to buy one for $675 plus freight and import it and try to fit it here .
Anyone ever fitted one themselves or have a better price

$1825 is not a bad price.
I can't imagine the freight on that to be cheap. I also heard that they are a b!tch to fit.
A cloth one will be nice compared to the oem vinyl.

Rockauto have them for around $470USD + shipping. I've bought a few parts from them and have been very impressed at quality. Quick calculation including shipping works out around $810NZD delivered within 5 days. GST might add another $120 onto the bill. They do have the modern cloth option for another couple hundred.

Re: Soft top for a Spyder
I had two prices from local suppliers Le Mans Auto Fabrics for around $1100+ GST and from Reid & Twiname for around $1700 + GST (roughly the same price as OEM). That was supply only, It looks like an interesting thing to change.

Re: Soft top for a Spyder
MikeP, would you happen to have a contact for that $1850 cloth top installed guy/shop? And did it have the heat/fog bars and working after they installed?
I’m ready to have mine done tomorrow if I can find the right person/shop to do it!

Re: Soft top for a Spyder
I’ve ordered a PVC one from eBay US. <$900, including shipping and tax. Apparently it’s easy to install and took a few buyers half a day to figure out. I’ll update with my own experience in a few weeks.

MIne came from Tops online in US https://www.topsonline.com/model/Conver ... pyder.html
US457.00 and Dalton at City trim in Onehunga fitted it in a day for 550 NZD Inc. I'm very pleased with it and it looks great > Came straight through sent by US mail
6 year guarantee on the glass bond too
Dalton has done 6 of these before and commented on how good the top was

Mega parts and collections in Patrick St Onehunga have a complete 2004 Spyder wrecking. It is SMT trans and only a few parts have sold including the 16" rear wheels which I bought this morning.
It is a late model car with the later front and later tail lights and body panels all looked mint

Re: Soft top for a Spyder
Thanks MikeP. Waikumete Upholstery quoted "up to $1800-$1900 at the outside, probably $1200-$1500" and laughed at the idea of anyone doing it for less than a grand. Oh, that's plus GST, so potentially over $2k to fit it.
I'm going to talk to CityTrim.

Re: Soft top for a Spyder
I know the guys at Waikumete and I tried them as well. They did my Porsche and good job but expensive.i asked them about the MR s and what scared me was they had never done one of those cars before.
Dalton at City trim has done 6 now and used to have anMRS himself
Good luck

Re: Soft top for a Spyder
Just an update on my roof about 6 months later.
At the time of pickup, Dalton mentioned the roof was hard to get back on. He had to "leverage" it or something. I didn't know what that meant at the time, and as he said to leave it up for a few days (to settle into shape) I didn't find out for a while.
When I brought the roof down, it was stiff. Putting it back up I found the issue. The clip didn't line up right with the hook. And there's a rubber/plastic piece inside the clip that is bent out of shape. I'm not sure how big a deal this is.
The first heavy rain, I noticed some water running down the passenger side (same side) window. The floor got a little damp on both sides, and I freaked out that it wasn't sealing. It seems to have settled in though as I've been checking it after every rain since. Seems ok now, so maybe it took time to settle in and loosen the material enough that closing it actually fully closes it. I'll keep watching and testing with the hose every wash.
At the end of the day, the purchase of the hood from eBay, import tax, shipping, and the install, cost about $1650 NZD all up.
Quotes for supply and install were around the $2500-$3000 mark, so I've done pretty well there. The possible leak is a huge deal though so I plan to confirm and (if needed) solve this very soon with Autumn around the corner. It may not even be roof related.

Hi Ivor
You have seen my new top fitted by Dalton and much the same experience but without the leak.Left mine up
For 2 weeks before lowering it and it seemed to seal.I have had no leaks and no issues so l guess it is where you buy the hood from in the first place
Mine came from tops online limited and comes with 6 year warranty so I'm happy
