Time to remove the E153 shift lever for a new boot and shaft seal. Plus clean the lever.

Unbolt the nut enough to cover the threads, then whack it with a hammer to drive the pin out. Lever slides right off after that.

A new set of rods for the GEN4 3SGTE build. I made the mistake of trying to use ARP rod bolts on the other set and an OEM bolt refused to come out. So I've collected another set. However this set is from a REV5 SW20 GEN3 3SGTE which are different from the REV3-4 SW20 3SGTE rods. So I'll clean these up, put the bearings into to these, not use the ARP bolts and move forward.

These are part number 13201-79425 where the others I have are 13201-79195. You can see a few different things on them. The oil holes have been drilled out larger and it appears the caps are slightly larger. The casting number on the side is 701N on the newer ones and 401U on the older ones. The cap nuts are 12 points like the GEN4 unlike the older ones with 6 points. These rods are from a newer engine than my GEN4 even though they are from the previous generation engine design.

Now that I have the GEN3 3SGTE rods for the GEN4 I can give them a gentle clean up in Evaporust. I've greased the wrist pin bushes to prevent anything happening to them. I don't think Evaporust will do anything but who knows. The light surface rust on the rest of the rods will be removed overnight and ready for drying off and a light oil coat. Then I'll resume the build after removing the other rods. Due to the part numbers not being the same I shouldn't use one from this set. I'm also not going to use the ARP rod bolts.

After a soak in Evaporust overnight these REV5 GEN3 3SGTE rods came up much better. The last 2 photos show the worst of the surface rust. It wasn't bad, but nice to remove prior to install.

To clarify why I say REV5 GEN3. These came in the 98-99 SW20 which is called a REV5 and the engine that was in it is called a GEN3. The previous rods I had in the engine prior to my stuck bolt issue were from the 94-97 SW20 which is REV3 and 4. The corrisponding rods were also fitted to the ST205 Celica engine and a bunch of GEN3 3SGE cars around the world. When the 3SGTE changed rods, so did the 3SGE. Same part number.

Early is 13201-79495
Late is 13201-79425
Which is odd to see the number going down instead of up.

Out with the early GEN3 3SGTE rods ready for the late GEN3 3SGTE rods. With only having 3 good rods I've had to swap in 4 good ones.

Removing the early GEN3 3SGTE rods from the CP pistons. Get a small flat head screwdriver to lever out the wrist pin clip. Then place a cloth over the top to prevent it from flying across the room as you completely remove it. Slide the pin out ready for the late GEN3 3SGTE rods.

Bearings swapped over to the late GEN3 rods. The rod bolts and nuts are different too. Different shape and the nuts are 12 point 14mm instead of 6 point. This is more in line with the original GEN4 3SGTE rods.

Put new lubricant on the bearings ready for installation. Putting the new rods onto the CP pistons is the same as removing. It's very hard to get any photos of installing the wrist pin clips as it's rather hard to get them in without two hands.

When installing the 3SGTE rods you need to make sure that the little casting bump at the top of the big end is facing forwards to the front of the engine and that the piston has the large cut outs for the bigger intake valve facing the right hand side of the engine.

Slide the piston into the cylinder having the crank facing up so it collects the bearing easier.

Once the piston and rod are in the cylinder you can wrap the piston ring compressor around the rings and piston. Then tap it in with a wooden or plastic handle of a hammer or similar.

Then add the rod cap onto the back and some engine oil to the nut face and threads. Then torque to 67 or 68Nm.

One last shot of the underside of the CP Carrillo pistons for the 3SGTE before they go unseen for hopefully a long long time.

Proof that I now have all 4 pistons and rods in the GEN4 3SGTE block.

Here is a rundown of what is in there.

GEN4 3SGTE block bored out 0.5mm
GEN4 3SGTE crank
ACL race bearings standard size for crank and rods
98 3SGTE rods with standard rod bolts. ARP are NOT installed.
CP Carrillo 0.5mm (86.5mm) OS forged pistons

Last few bolts to clean up. These are for holding the GEN4 3SGTE windage tray and oil pickup tube onto the oil pump and block.

Final clean and reapplication of rust protection to the windage tray and oil pickup on the GEN4 3SGTE. Can't have this rusting while I wait for the installation of the engine. I still have plenty of other stuff to sort out prior to putting the engine in.
