Mufflers

Post by 85AW20v »

A lot of you have heard it and I've had enough of the exhaust noise in the racecar. What are people's experiences, thoughts, whatever on the mufflers that are out there to quieten the thing down? Price will come into it and as it isn't a daily driver, it doesn't need to be super quiet either. I also don't want to restrict it and rob any of the power. I've looked at the following but don't know if they're good or bad:

Any thoughts, good or bad?

Nothing wrong with your car ( sound wise)
Im running a 2.5 " system with a coby running in to a CHASE muffler
This is noisy in the cab (drones in the 4000 to 7000 rpm ) and a tad loud for my liking out side the car.
Im looking at fitting a 350Z muffler which WILL quieten it down but it big and heavy .

Boosted cars are like hot women.
A little edgy, every guy wants one,
some guys can't handle them,
and if you throw a little alcohol in them they'll rock your world.

I just started building an exhaust for my sw20 v6 project, its a single in dual out transverse muffler that is a straight through design, it is hard to find a muffler with this Xdesign. This one is made for a Pontiac firebird/Camaro as some of them run the same muffler style as the mr2. This is an Xlerator AP muffler but Magnaflow also do one in this design
this is the one I am using

This is the magnaflow option

But racecar? Loud because racecar. Sorry waiter there's too much alcohol in my whisky. It must vibrate your car in a funny way. Would softening up the mounts between the car and exhuast do anything? I guess I'm thinking its the vibrations from the noise not the noise itself doing your head in

No it's the noise. When you do 150-200km at a Playday it starts to get to me. Maybe I'm just getting old.....

This would be the ultimate in aw11 exhausts with the right earplugs.

If you look just below the O2 sensor fitting there is a custom made resonator that reduces drone a bit, may be worth trying.

Sw20 turbo muffler was a bit noisy but had very little drone. Was heavy though.

I think I know THAT DRONE. And why I took the exhaust off Blue.
Used to get me around 80k to 120k running motorway
And fitted up that old twin outlet big bore.

Do you want to buy complete or build? I still have the parts I bought from Chris to make one up.
Never got around to doing anything with it. Two mufflers, two 'U' sections, and one 'Y'.
David has a system (pics on his thread) of how to build.
I am open to offers to see it go to a member.

Complete performance may cost a fair bit, even secondhand.

I am still waiting for my new exhaust from Moonlight Racing.
Big bore and said to be only a few db over stock.
But new you are looking at a lot of money. Saving grace is that a good one will be stainless.

I miss the sound of the side exit exhaust I once had on my worked old HR Holden. Sounded like a box of firecrackers.

If there's one thing I love about a supercharged AW though it's the way they can howl. Howwwwooooo cool is that!

I'll just be cutting out the muffler I've got and welding in another one.

Its pretty difficult to make a fairly large (2.5" and up) exhaust for MR cars. You just need to add as many resonators and mufflers as you can fit, really.

Not that difficult if you have a transverse muffler. Ive never made an exhaust before and didn't find it particularly difficult
