Centric rings for wheels

Post by thorns »

Should I bother?

Bore on the wheels is 72.5mm and the hub on a SW20 is 60.1mm I have been told. Is it worth trying to track a set down or will the nuts pull them up nicely anyway?

I picked up a set from amazon for cheap. Possibly about $10USD for the set plus shipping. But they are 73.1mm wheel bore instead of your 72.5mm.

I have not had issues in the past with my other wheels not running rings but I don't have issues with them on the new wheels either.

Figured I might as well try them out, ordered a set online, hopefully arrive in time for the weekend so i can mount the new wheels/tyres up. Only a plastic set, but will keep an eye out for aluminium ones if I come across them.

I hadn't ever run them on my AW racecar. I moved up to 15" rims so lower profile tyres and subsequently cracked a front hub around the lip on the centre of the hub flange. I wouldn't run anything without them now. I would think the standard OEM rims would be a tight fit over the lip in the centre of the flanges.

Yeah OEM does but aftermarket is normally 70+mm.

Seems the bore must actually 72.6/72.7 or something, these 72.5mm drop in with a tiny amount of play. Probably pointless to run if they are not a snug fit im guessing as it kind of defeats the purpose.

Some of mine did too. But I'm not having any issues with vibrations even at 160kph on track. Your lug nuts will centre the wheel properly and the friction on the mounting face of the wheel and brake rotor to hub works fine. 5 nuts at 110nm of torque is quite a bit to hold things in place.

The rings aren't there "to hold things in place". They're there to transfer the wheel/steering loads to the bearing rather than the flange flexing and then cracking, which is what happened to the AW.

The wheel studs are not intended for loading in shear (right angle to the stud). Centric rings allow for all the shear load to be taken by the hub. This means that the wheel studs are only stressed by forces acting towards left and right. It's not really to do with the vibrations moreso manufacturer design. Be careful with plastic rings as they can melt during track duty.
