Wheel spacers

Post by Millhouse1 »

Guys what's the story with wheel spacers, to give your car a wider stance? I've seen a lot of images of Adub's with wheels that sit further out towards the body and I really like the look. Is there a standard spacer size/type anyone can recommend? I have 15" wheels from a Mr2 Mk3. I've read that these need to be certified, is that right? Who can do this? Just an AA branch or a VTNZ station? And what's involved in fitting them? Is it something I could do?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I can't tell you what thickness you need but bolt on have a minimum thickness due to the wheel nuts that hold the spacer on before you bolt the wheels on.
There are slip on spacers too. Slip on would require longer studs generally.

Don't buy cheap if you do buy some as they can break. Same for the studs.
Yes they need to be certified and for just wheel spacers, that is a lot of money. They also put the wheel size on the cert plate meaning you can't change them. Uncerted cars, you can do what you want with wheels within reason.
A proper registered certifier needs to do the work. It's not something that the AA or VTNZ can do. Have a read of the LVVTA rules around this sort of thing. All the documents are online.

As for fitting them, you can do it as long as you know how to fit a wheel, you can fit a spacer. Not to be rude, but if you have to ask you probably shouldn't be trying to fit something like this. Definitely get someone who has done it before to show you. Safety first

Be careful with spacers, I've had friends go around corners and lose their outside wheel, and hit the corner instead. You're also messing around with the cars geometry, "technically" as you have a wider track, the car should be more stable, however Toyota engineered their cars a specific way for a reason. You may find a lose of a few handling points, and because of the Cert, you are stuck that way, without re-Certing. I'd look at wheels with a different offset before spacers.

Even if you just get wheels with a different offset you may find that the track width changes enough to require a cert. You also need the top of the tread covered if it pokes out past the guard.

I totally forgot about the covering of the tread. I've found WoF places have cracked down on that heavily recently.

I hear they are now going after your wheels too however the VIRM only states tyre tread. Not wheels.

If your car has no wheels how are you going to get it to the WoF shop in the first place

I think he means that if your tyres are stretched onto your rims and the rim sits outside the guard, then you're in the poopoo tootoo.....

Thanks for the advice peeps. I think I'll look at wheels with a different offset rather than spacers then. Seems easier and won't potentially upset the geometry of the car so much.
