Evansdale and Naseby Run, November 23, 2003

The Otago Area November run took place on the 4th Sunday this month. Meeting at the usual venue, there were three AW11's, three SW20's and one AW10 - serial number 145!!! (Is this the oldest one in NZ?)

We departed about 10.20am up the No.1 Highway  to the Evansdale Cheese factory, now located at the old Cherry Farm Psychiatric Hospital, where sampled and got some info on cheese. Here we met Ted in his 190E Mercedes accompanied by his youngest daughter, Jessica, one SW20 from Timaru, an SW20 and an AW11 from Oamaru. Monica and Charles also caught us up from Dunedin.

At Palmerston we were met by Steve Marsh in his new Bitchy Missus FTO - very nice. We left SH1 and proceeded up SH85 "The Pigroot" through Green Valley, Morrisons and over Red Cutting Summit into the Maniototo. This was one of the routes taken by goldminers in the 1860's. We met Pam and Ray Harris (Hoppy 1 and Hoppy 2 - they are both in plaster! (pictured) and Neil and Kirsten Stewart in two more AW11's at Kyeburn. From here we proceeded to the wee motoring museum in Naseby. Here we ran into some of the MG Club on their monthly outing. Nice cars and people. After a good look and a chinwag we returned to the hospitality of Pam and Ray's for a BBQ at their crib at Ranfurly.

After food and socializing the group broke up and we started on our return trip via various routes; North and East Otago and South Canterbury returning via The Pigroot and the rest via the Strath Taieri. A couple of cars stopped at the Hyde Railway Disaster Monument. The occupants walked up the Rail Trail for a while to the site of the disaster, which happened on 4th June 1943.

Merry Christmas to all and have a safe holiday - drive carefully.
