In the weekend while having dinner with the president and first lady we got to talking as one does about MR2s and the world in general.

The topic of what they would replace the MR2 with came up and Keith said he had heard it was a hybrid. Well something rang a bell in this ol head of mine and I remembered this article with pics.

Regardless of which side you rest on, the Toyota TE-Spyder 800 Hybrid concept leaves a check in all of the proverbial boxes that made the MR2 unique. Is it mid-engine? Yes. Is it rear-wheel-drive? Yes. Is it lightweight? Well—at 1000 kg, or 2204 lbs for the Western world, this makes the new model TE-Spyder slightly leaner than the 3rd generation 1999-2007 MR2 Spyder, which totaled in at 2,195 pounds.

Isn't that just a rebodied ZZW30? Toyota wouldn't use an old chassis to make their new MR2 even if the ZZW platform was good.

It is a concept car so they might have used whatever they had . Apparently there are actually 3 of them.

Hopefully they make something but somehow I think we will be disappointed. The supra wasn't really what I was hoping for. Surely a purist sports car can have real analogue dials on the dash and not have ipads stuck all over the place. And of course the option for manual.
