Stereo fuse

Post by Saut de Chat »

Am I correct in reading that the fuse for the stereo is shared by the cigarette lighter?
I have no power to my stereo but cannot find any blown fuses. :?

I believe it is. Plug something into the cigarette lighter to confirm.

Radar in the cig works, but no power to the headunit.

I know aftermarket stereos have their own fuse on the back, don't know about factory units.

There are two in-line fuses in the back. Those glass ones. A 15A on the ON and a 0.5A on the ACC.
Neither of these look blown. (The wire inside is still intact.)

Alright, found another fuse up by the battery which was the issue.

Now I am wondering where the standard 12V is for the radio.
Mine has a wire connected directly from the battery to the headunit. :?

You will have to find the factory wiring loom in the dash.

Possibly a blue and yellow wire. Depends on the year of your car.

EDIT: Wire colours change throughout the years so ignore the above.

Also I tried testing to find what wire was 12v in my 1990 factory loom last night but non had any power to it.

The "radio" fuse is connected to the ACC input of the radio, if this is blown the power mirrors, cig lighter and clock will also not work. The "dome" fuse is connected to the permanent 12V feed of the standard stereo.

There are two rectangular plugs from the loom in the car.
One has all the wiring for the speakers.
The other has all the power and dimmer.
Where these all connect into the loom there are no spare wires visible.
Should I go digging in the loom or would it be better to tap something from the cig?

My car has ACC hooked up to the cig and the 12v hooked into the hazard light wiring near the plug. It was like that when I got the car and everything was hooked into a chocolate block.

I'm guessing from what you said that your stereo 12v is hooked directly to the battery without a fuse? If so the cig is probably the easiest way to safely add a fuse into the system.

Can you post a picture of the two plugs? I might be able to find what wire does what. My car only has one plug but doesn't match the diagrams I have.
