Compatible OBDII Scanners for GEN4 3SGTE

Post by GDII »

I have bought the little blue ELM327 OBDII bluetooth a while back for my Mazda Demio and it's worked great with the Android Torque and Torque Pro apps for codes and ECU data output but I have never been able to get it to connect to any Toyota ECU. The Toyota cars and ECUs I have tried it on are a 1997 ST215 Caldina GTT, a 2002 Corolla GL, an MRS and a GEN4 swapped SW20 with an auto and a manual ECU. None of them connect to it but all 3 Mazda and one Subaru worked.

What have others used to successfully connect to Toyota and more specifically the GEN4 3SGTE? This is a possible candidate.

I had a similar one that I used for my 06 commodore and the same one connects to my dad's shit Toyota ipsum. Obviously I can't use it on my MR2. Haha too old.

Yeah MR2s with the OEM engine, ECU and wiring are OBD1 but I can still setup the GEN4 ECU to do the same ECU code CEL flash as the OEM MR2 setup but that's for codes only. It can either be wired into the OBD1 port and jumper as per the Toyota BGB or jumper the OBD2 port to flash codes too. I want to be able to see the rest of the ECU data. The reason I still keep the OBD1 port in is because it makes it easier to DIY CEL flash and also the ABS and powersteeing ECUs are separate units that can have their own codes.

Boosted cars are like hot women.
A little edgy, every guy wants one,
some guys can't handle them,
and if you throw a little alcohol in them they'll rock your world.

Yeah I've spent a bit of time looking through that like you saw. But now I can't find where to put the code into the updates Pro app. I was sure it was under Vehicle Profile.

Yip, read that one and the one about the topic I started  and I have wired the first swap I did as per the Caldina wiring diagram but also I have a full unmolested car to plug the scanners into and still nothing. I'm after the data read out for the App rather than the codes. Codes I can get.

Ok I found where to put in the code and even a modified code from a guy in Canada doesn't work. I am getting errors logged so maybe my ELM327 is not suitable for these ECUs or it's just faulty. It works with Mazda ECUs so it's a bit frustrating it doesn't work for the ECU I really want. Time to look at a better bluetooth unit I think.
