Brake upgrade for my 89 AW11 MR2 recommendations?

Post by Mr-Paulio »

Hi team!
So I'm thinking it's time for a brake upgrade in the ADub.
I've owned it since 2004 and never done anything. Not even pads.
Modified now and certed with the brakes as a pass still. And I agree they still get the job done just fine.
Probably because the vehicle weight is much the same if anything now less.
But regardless why not make some improvements!

I see no need to go silly with a big brake kit and upset the balance and handling of the car. I'm thinking rotors, pads, braided lines and new good fluid.

I'm interested in thoughts, advice, recommendations if anyone has used any of these?

Rotors, from a bit of research I don't seem much options here other than stock or some slotted ones from Australia. Which I am happy to do unless anyone knows some local distributors?
https://www.grays.com/retail/opa-RDA750 ... escription
https://www.vmaxbrakes.com.au/rtype-slo ... 1989-front

Braided lines I can find local.

Pads I would like some advice or recommendations on?
It's not a daily, weekend toy, track etc, so performance, if they create dust that's fine I have black wheels! πŸ˜›
And they can wear fast.
But I would prefer they didn't chew out my rotors too fast.

Fluid, again open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance!! 😁

Cheers.
I didn't think about the master. But makes sense even if it seems fine to do that while I'm doing the rest.
I'll look into the pads further.

I have seen that big brake kit before.
How do you find it?
It doesn't upset the Bias or handling?
Uses the same master okay?

I've got AE101 disks all round in the racecar and Remsa Master HPT pads from the local brake guy. Pads don't fade and had about 1/4 left after the 8 hour trackday we did at Taupo last year. Each driver was out for an hour at a time and everyone was impressed with how the brakes were. A couple of the drivers have done the Wellington Street Race a few times and one European tracks for a season and Bathurst 12 hour too, so they do know what they're doing - and talking about.

Disks don't seem to wear much if at all and the pads are about $300 for a full set the last lot I got. With yours being an 89 it's probably got about the same size rotors that I have anyway, although I have removed all the backing plates so there's a bit more air getting round the disks.

Colin's been in my car a few times so he knows what the braking is like.....
See ya

What Simon says
I'm running a SW20 master cylinder with an adjustable restrictor on the front line to stop the fronts locking up to early.
Have Toyota calipers on at the mo. for a WOF then back to MPR big brakes for a cert.
good pads good fluid good discs is all you will need .

Guess I'll start making some orders from Aus then.

Unless anyone knows of slotted local...

Hey here's another question for ya's.

J-slot or R-slot?

No information regarding which is better for what. Just that the J-slot is slightly more expensive.

Cheers 😁

Some reading for you
https://www.brembo.com/en/company/news/ ... erformance

From a Nissan GTR Forum
https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/j-hook-vs ... l%20speeds.

J-hooks: More bite at higher speeds, a little more pad wear, more brake groan. Not too bad on the road, but certainly not as quiet as the slotted version.

Slotted: Slightly less initial bite at higher speeds (about the same at lower speeds), a little less pad wear, less brake groan at all speeds.

Slotted will be just fine 8)

Any Good dot 4 and up will work the secret is to renew it often ,
Yearly at least or before and after any track day cause everything will get very hot ,
your rims the brake discs and the "fluid" .
as Simon mentioned leave the dust shields off.
I have also have had this recommended by Gary Stirling.
he Campaigned a AW11 in Targa NZ several times.
also runs .

Shameless plug sorry . :)

Look what I found in my workshop!
20220126_153130.jpg
Now I am having a little trouble finding an OEM master cylinder. Toyota said no more. Repco said refer OEM 🀣
Those are the only places I've tried so far.
But any input appreciated.

Also, performance pads.
Contacted Resma they have rears and not fronts. (It's been over a week still waiting for the quote...)
RDA have ceramic fronts not rears.
And DBA can do a set of street performance, not ceramic.
So, might have to hunt around a bit more next week when I go MC hunting 🀣

Meanwhile, discs arranged. And I'll order next week (new month) And braided lines already received 😁
