Aw11 rear pads replacement problem

Post by Mikew »

Replacing the rear pads should have been a routine job but....
Manual says you 'it maybe necessary to pushback the piston caliper piston. Use needle nose pliers to move the piston. Turn the piston clockwise while pushing it in until it locks.
Can't get either side to move following those instructions.
Tried a big c-clamp but no joy either.
Any clues before I pull the caliper to bits???
Cheers

C clamps don't work, as you found out. You have to rotate the piston back in because the handbrake is part of the assembly and it's on a spiralled shaft. You have to turn it clockwise to move it in and then line the marks in a certain orientation, which I've forgotten since it's been ages since I've done brakes.

Thanks Jason. Have tried turning clockwise with needle nosed pliers but nothing moves, is there a special tool I need to have for this?

This is the official Fuller SST I use to get the pistons back into place. The "v" indents nee to be parallel to the ground to match with the protrusions on the back of the brake pad.

You aren't damaging any sealing surface using the pliers as the piston seal is below the the dust seal and the piston is a smaller diameter at the top. Any marks left help to remind you which SST you used last time too!

Ha ha, thanks Simon, didn't try those cause I didn't want to damage sealing surface. I'll have a hack tomorrow with those.

I found if you wind them out a bit they free up. Only maybe a quarter turn, not too far or they will come out. As you turn them back in push as well. I have one of those cubes but doesn't work that well as none of the sides fit the SW20 or the AW11 properly. Pliers work too.
You can see in this link there are a whole lot of parts inside the rear calipers of this type. Not the best design with an incorporated handbrake.
