Parking light decided it wanted to be an indicator

Post by mknz »

One of my front indicator bulbs stopped working and the parking light magically took over it's duty. I'd normally send it, but it flashes too quickly to get a WOF.

Behaviour:
Parking lights on - parking light on
Indicator on regardless of parking lights - parking light acts like an indicator
Nothing - parking light off

I've even pulled the plug out and tested on that in case it was just the housing

Possibly a bad earth in the circuit. I think there are earth bolts in the front fenders.

I'm not too familiar with AW wiring but it seems somewhere that the 2 circuits are getting linked when they shouldn't be.

Yeah, I'm guessing the wiring going into the fender has worn insulation or something

At some point in the past the park light wires had a bridge connector installed, probably for Charlie's DRL relay. The ground wire in the butt connector was just clamped down on the insulation. I stripped it and now the indicator works properly.

I'm pretty sure as the cable moved around that's what was causing my intermittent indicator issues. I believe what was happening was that the park light became the ground for the indicator, which seems genius TBH because you know the light isn't working, but you still have something to indicate with.

I blew a couple of fuses with my rigged test light (someone has done something with my multimeter), but I got it sussed tonight so I can get a WOF tomorrow.
