Tyres, any recomendations

Post by Crawls »

I am aware this has been done before, however I am wanting to keep the stock rims for the moment anyway. But I am looking for semi decent tyres, but am unsure as what fits and who sells them. I currently have some shot 195/65/14s on the front and 205/60/14s on the back. Without giving me grief about not going up in size :) what are my options? I have enquired around the tyre shops in hawkes bay, but most haven't got back to me. But one said I can possibly get a 245/50/14 for the back.

I can't answer your question directly but I would suggest looking up performance tires one after another until you find something in your size. I would go through the major brands, Dunlop sometimes have some less common sizes in performance orientated models, Toyo as well. Then order them into your local shop or take them yourself for fitment.

You have the choice of Chinese budget tyres or Toyo semi slicks on the stock 14s correct sizes of 195/60R14 and 205/60R14.

However if you get a little creative you can get some quality tyres by mix and matching almost the right sizes. Keeping the stagger is important and IMO a quality tyre that is almost the right size is better than some random hard rubber Chinese tyre in the correct size.

There is a reasonable selection of 185/60R14 and 195/65R14 tyres. Hankook K415 Optimo, Goodyear Assurance Triplemax and Dunlop SP Touring T1 will be quite good in those sizes without breaking the bank.

If you want to keep stock rims though, get some factory 15s. Then you can actually get some real performance tyres with the Bridgestone Potenza RE003s which are the ducks nuts. They tame my lead tipped arrow Toyota Blade Master around wet roundabouts and tight twisty mountain passes in the South Island.

I'm still having this issue too - I actually really like how the factory 14s look, but have some rather less attractive 16s on currently, with a view to get some decent tyres shortly. However if you manage to track down anything good for the 14s let me know :) I'd love to be able to put those back on.

A quality tyre 5-10% out of ratio is far better than a Chinese one in ratio. Throwing the ratio out further will and can mean slow car, rubbing, incorrect suspension geometry and weird looks

You are only allowed 5% out of diameter. Even going 4% makes the NA cars noticeably slower.

Mixing and matching is not always the best idea either as each tyre has its own characteristics making the car feel odd. One will move around with driver inputs more than the other or the tread compounds will make the car feel odd as they get hot or cold or wet or dry.

I'm rubbing a lot with my 10%... and it was more a very generic percentage in terms of cars, look at some 4x4 enthusiasts and what they do...

Never heard of them and do you mean Arivo? But based on look at the website they don't provide any information on the tyre. No write up on how they perform.

Yes that is expensive. I can get same size for the Demio for well under $100 and they are just as bad.
