gas struts for front trunk

Post by rocco26 »

Firstly, i hope Olaf's day went well!.Earlier this week my gas struts arrived from Canada, via ebay for my frunk.
Yeah , Colin is right i do have too much time on my hands ,but it is all done after hours. So last night i installed the little buggers. The only hassle i had was to replace two of the bolts that hold the front guards with pan head screws. My frunk gets used on a regular basis, as we go mountain biking ,hence the tow bar. so gas struts was the next thing to spend money on.It has become an addiction and i have promised my wife that i will go into counseling next week.

That looks great. Do you have any detailed images of the fixing points and a description of the install method?

Hi Phil,
Strut is 510mm long extended.from point to point. The top ball joint had been grinded down to clear the guard. The top ball joint replaced the highest bolt that holds the hinge on and the other ball joint is screwed into one the bolts that attaches the guard to.The bolt i replaced[sat up too high] hit the strut and stopped the bonnet from closing flush.

I've got a couple of spare gas struts I always planned to use for this mod. Don't use the frunk as much as you do but prop rod is so ancient. Will fab up brackets to do someday.

Is there anything special needed to put struts in frunk? I can get the right length ones with the end bolts, but don't know if I need anything else

The strut end bolts replace a front guard bolt and a hinge bolt. That's it. Very simple.

There are kits you can buy. Where are you sourcing your parts from?

Those will last a few years, if you get them from stabilus for a little more they'll last much longer. But 120$ is pretty cheap for two

MR2 Heaven sell a kit for $124NZD plus shipping, whatever that insane price might be and if you even get them.
So this price isn't too bad compared.
