What to do before putting new (secondhand) 3sge in SW20?

Post by geemannz »

Hey
So I picked up a new (second hand) 3rd gen 3sge the other day to replace my current engine, and currently have it on the engine stand so I can give it a bit of a clean and refurbishment before I get it in my car.
Only history I have about the engine is that the Odometer said 180,000kms and it came from a 4wd caldina.

Im wanting to know what are the priorities to do before putting it back in, as I only have around 500ish to spend on this stage.

Thinking about doing the cam belt, water pump and possibly gaskets, but not sure what I can do with my budget, as 3rd gen 3SGE parts seem to be pretty expensive.

Oil seals for the oil pump, crank (both ends), cam belt and idlers and tensioner. Water pump as changing it out needs the cam belt to come off. If your current 3SGE has a newish pump use that. Oil seals on the cams are less likely to leak so do those only if you feel the need.

Other than that the rest can be done on the car later.

How much do you reckon the seals would be? I havent been able to find a timing kit (belt, pulley, and tensioner) for less than 400 anywhere, so not sure if ill be able to afford it.

Try Toyota with the club discount or BNT with the same club discount.

Did you just redo these on the current engine? I forget what the history is with the one you have in the car.

The engine I have has a HG failure among a few other potential issues.
I bought a new engine to replace the one currently in my car. This is because I have extremely limited workshop time to get the engine out and fixed and I cant afford to not have car for more than a day or two. The plan is to get this engine to the best condition I can, then take my old problematic engine out, and put the new one in, and either keep my old one for parts, or sell the parts, try and make some money back. Agreeably not the simplest plan, but its the best for my budget and time restraints.

Ok so you haven't got some parts you can take off the current engine as they are old too.

Pretty much unfortunately. Not really willing to use any parts off my current engine unless necessary, and they have been checked over properly. Some parts i'm gonna have to use, like the AC compressor, alternator brackets, filler neck, etc but as far as im aware, they are working properly so shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah all your other parts will be fine to reuse. All you are doing is swapping over the main engine parts that don't match up between Caldina and MR2. Unfortunately that's wiring too.

Wiring will be fine, fortunately that's my specialty, been doing work experience for a Auto electrical place and been studying electronics for years. It's just my mechanical knowledge that is somewhat lacking at the moment.

That's good to have that skill and knowledge. It's actually going to be super easy, you just swap over the whole wiring harness. It's just a matter of doing it. Plug and play. Things that are different between the harness are really only the alternator position. You know what you are doing, Toyota 80s and 90s engine wiring is super simple anyway.
