Hey Guys - does anyone know if the 2nd gen 3SGTE and 3rd gen 3SGTE have identical blocks ?
I understand one can fit a gen3 3SGTE head on gen2 block ... though I'm looking at doing the opposite -using a Gen 2 Head ( https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-pa ... 802452.htm ) on gen 3 block ( https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listin ... 1868254134 ). I believe that's a Gen 3 engine but not 100% sure
Other concerns are the sump being interchangeable - not sure if the bottom of the Gen3 block is the same shape/size as the gen 2
Any info would be much appreciated
Cheers,
Ivan

Re: Gen2 head on Gen3 3SGTE Block
You need to swap over the oil pump and sump if you are doing that however that is not a 3SGTE block.
Looks like a GEN3 3SGE block based on the casting and the 3SGE oil cooler setup. There is a casting and bung for the turbo oil feed which has been added. Sump is a full GEN2 pan setup by the looks with modded baffles rather than the 2 piece alloy and steel. Head seems to be GEN3 based on the valve cover and the intake manifold is from a GEN5 3SGE from the Altezza. Water pump is GEN2. The only thing I can't tell is what oil pump it is using. Hybrid of everything.

Re: Gen2 head on Gen3 3SGTE Block
Thank for the detailed info greatly appreciated.
I'm literally trying to get a gen 2 engine and build it up - while retaining the driveability of my sw20 by keeping the gen2 engine inside meanwhile .
I've spent too much time on setting everything up properly so I don't want to go down the path of swapping headers/fuel setup etc. to go gen3. Ill keep looking ... hopefully trademe santa brings something eventually
Cheers

Re: Gen2 head on Gen3 3SGTE Block
The thing that makes it a 3SGE block is the oil cooler face does not have the 4 bolt holes for the oil cooler adapter. Not sure why the GTE has an adapter plate, I'm sure someone can advise why.
This shows the adapter
http://www.turbomr2.com/MR2/HowTo/Engin ... GTE-02.htm
Water pump is the pipes entering the back above each other rather than beside.
The oil pump is a mystery though as if you take off the GEN3 sump the oil pump and filter system changes completely.
