Yes, it is impossible to mask them off properly. I just wanted the very edges and the top hats coated. I doubt the VHT on the face will last to the end of the driveway.

It won't, there's a few aftermarket rotor manufacturers that paint theirs too

I baked the calipers in the oven, but purposely didn't put the rotors in. They will harden from normal use after a couple of drives.

Do you happen to remember about the front caliper pins only having a tiny seal on one of the two pins? I know it is normal as I found others on mr2oc commenting. I just don't know if it matters which one of the pins gets the seal.

Only one pin has it and it goes into the bottom of the caliper.

Page BR-23. 2 (c)

It's also shown in the parts diagram but it's not quite clear as it only shows one caliper.

Thank you! I clearly didn't study the BGB as closely as I thought I did. I also see my car doesn't have any anti-squeal shims between the pads and calipers, only those U-shaped wire things. I never had any noise.

Would anyone bother sourcing them?

All good. It was something I found when rebuilding mine.

I don't have shims on the rear and I have them on the front. My fronts squeak regardless. Some pads come with anti squeal backing pads stuck to the pad. You can't install these without taking out the shims as they are too thick.

This is dependent on what pads you install. If you're installing OEM ones then yes you'll want the shims.

I got some porterfield R4S from the US. I will have to have a good look at the back. I know they have built in shims on some other models.

I will grease the backs of the pads anyway, I was going to use copper anti-seize but I am concerned it may eat the piston rubber dust boot. Hopefully there will be some Toyota lube left over unless someone has any other suggestions?

The pads will probably come with instructions at their price point and tell you what to do regarding grease and shims.

That's easy, front shim kits are discontinued, rear are $103 from Japan.

Looks like you're making good progress.
I tried to warn you it takes some time, ay.. much needed though by the look of it.
If you want to borrow my dremmel, pop over...(or bring them over, do it for you)
I'll chuck some rust converter on it too.

I'm sure it will all be well worth it once you're finished.

Thanks! PM sent. You're right. I think if there was no corrosion inside, I didn't paint them and had new pistons already it might take a few days only. I always bank on a few weeks with this car now.

New pistons finally arrived. The rear ones were very easy. The insides cannot come out without destroying the piston. They definitely do not twist out, there is not enough clearance by 2-3mm for this. They are definitely placed inside and the tabs punched around the edges during manufacture. My local friendly engineer cut them both in half with the lathe in about 2 minutes, this is definitely the way to do it!

The new ones come with a beefy C-clip to hold them in place. CJ mentioned partsmaster stock OEM replacements so this might not have been necessary. I ordered some Bendix ceramic brake lube from https://www.tinkr.co.nz It was the only one I could find that had a high temperature rating and safe with rubber. I am sure the Toyota kit contains enough for the inside. I am not sure there will be enough for lubing the back of the brake pads though. https://www.bendix.com.au/product-range ... -lubricant

Oooh nice.
Ive put 2 rounds of rust kill on the calipers.
It keeps getting more off. I'll hit it with the dremmel sunday and get them back to you.
Once the seal goes in, shouldnt get much moisture in that little area anyway.
