Wheel Fitment

Post by ARCZEN »

Hello everyone. I am looking at getting a new set of wheels. I am wondering if this set from hyperdrive will fit. I am looking for a flush or close to flush fitment with the fenders.

There are two options for the 18x9 and I am not sure which one to go with. I don't know a lot about all the numbers so any help would be appreciated!

Front: 17x8 5x100 44P
Rear: 18x9 5x114.3 35P or 18x9 5x120 35P

HI Mate,

Offset is too high on the front pair and it would be sitting in the suspension. Also wrong stud pattern (you need 5x114.3 not 5x100).

Rear 18x9 5x114.3 will fit fine and be a few mills from flush. Thing is to remember is that the lower the offset the wider you have to go. Also to add to the complexity is tyre size as sidewall height can be the difference between rubbing or not.

Here's a great site to figure out flushness etc https://91mr2.com/wheel-and-tire-calculator/. I'm going to order some wheels in the next few months with specs like this : 17x8 +28 17x9 +28 which is slightly aggressive but will be perfectly flush once you add a bit of camber front and back. Welcome to the fun world of finding staggered sets of wheels for mr2s in mid offsets :D

5x100 stud pattern is for Subaru, Toyota 86 or Celica. You need a 5x114.3 stud pattern. The offset of +44 isn't right even if they were the right stud pattern. You need a +35 offset. +44 will possibly foul the strut.

The rears as long as you get the 5x114.3 will be fine. However 18" wheels on an MR2 make it look like a roller-skate because of the tyre sizes available. 245/35R18 is the closest available to the stock rolling diameter but you will have to spend more than those wheels are worth each tyre. 255/35R18 are cheaper but now you will have the balloon effect.

Stick to 17s front and rear.

Flush offset and standard for SW20 wheels is 17x8 front with +35 offset. 215/40R17 tyres. Rear is 17x9 + 35 offset with a 245/35R17, 245/40R17 or 235/40R17.

Thanks for the info. I think I get confused looking at wheel and tyre sizes side by side.

I was looking at these Volks on Facebook. These look closer. Not sure about the offset though.

Use this, you can plug in any specs from wheels you find to see how they will fit. Much easier than guessing:

I've seen quite a few cracked grids, so if you care I'd suggest something else.

They will fit. However they aren't staggered fitment and they will sit just as sunk into the guards as stock wheels do.

I didn't think it would be this hard to find wheels that fit let alone ones I like. Lol

It's not hard to find wheels to fit an SW20. You just need to look around, be a little patient and know what you are looking for. If your budget extends to brand new wheels that opens up a whole new world.

There are 2 options that give you a base to work with for a nice looking setup that will fit the car without any mods. Standard or lowered spring vs coilover suspension will also dictate what front wheel and tyre you can use.

For these options I'll go with 17" as they are generally the better wheel diameter to go for as tyres are far more available vs 15s or 16s and 18s are normally too big to make the car drive properly. Plus you end up with no side wall in the tyre.

Option 1
17x7+35 front and 17x8+35 rear. Not quite a flush offset but works really well. Flush would be +22 for front and rear but they don't often come with those offsets.
Tyres 215/40R17 and 235/40R17.

Option 2
17x8+35 front and 17x9+35 rear. Flush with no body mods.
Tyres 215/40R17 and 235/40R17 or 245/40R17 works too. Don't use 45 profiles as that causes issues.

There are plenty of arguments about Rota wheels as a brand but personally I wouldn't support a brand that openly advertises that they change a reputable design by 20% to call it their own then sell substandard products. Sure they are a huge company who also make a massive amount of OEM wheels but wheels like the Grid or similar are not something I'd buy to support them. Better off with real TE37s. Extremely light for what they are.

I have 17x8 35 offset up front and 17x9 35 rear, I had to roll the rear guards to stop tyres rubbing. But have flush fitment I’m running advanti stage wheels

What size rear tyre?

My last car only needed the lip folded up.

235/45 which are far tall tyres. Even bigger than a 245/40.
