Fire Extinguisher Mounting
So looking at doing a track day at some stage, and most required cabin mounted fire extinguisher.
Where do you normally mount these, and how do you do it? Are there any MR2 specific mounts I should check out? I'm in no hurry at this stage, so happy to wait and do it right with proper parts, rather than bodging up a quick fix.
Seems I need a 1kg minimum extinguisher to meet most trackday rules at Ruapuna.

Mine tucked in under front of passenger seat. Drilled two holes through floor cross member to mount as require nut & bolt metal fixing. Not sure if it’s a 1kg extinguisher as have had installed for several years.
Another inexpensive but not required item is a fire blanket. Easy enough to hang behind seat on coat hook. Very handy item if ever encountering an engine fire.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Mounting
You can make a seat rail mounted bracket using the seat rail front bolts. This can either be in front of the drivers or passenger seat but it must be easily accessible from the drivers seat. In a car with racing harnesses you can't reach the passenger seat with the belt on.
You need one with 2 metal straps to comply with most events that ask for a fire extinguisher. Some events don't require one but if you have one installed it must comply.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Mounting
2 Nuts with Bolts needed, and two quick release straps are normally needed. Mine is similar to Jim's, passenger side footwell, right hand side running parallel to the car. If you can fit a 2kg do it, you'll need more fire fighting powder than you think if you have a fire, but you will only need a 1kg to pass regulations

Re: Fire Extinguisher Mounting
Thanks, will look for a 2kg then if I can make it fit.
Prefer the idea of the seat rail mount I think, would rather not drill into the floor if I can avoid it.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Mounting
Sorry, I should have made it a bit clearer, the 2kg will be a squeeze if you still want passengers, but it's good if you won't have a passenger seat or you have a roll cage etc, or you find a suitable place for itthorns wrote:Thanks, will look for a 2kg then if I can make it fit.

I believe the regulations will force you to drill it through so they can see the nuts on the other side, you'll need to check with the organisers

Re: Fire Extinguisher Mounting
Mounted like this would be okay though? Fixed to the seat mounts like GD suggested above?

I actually have no idea, they normally state "it must be mounted securely" or something similar.thorns wrote:Mounted like this would be okay though? Fixed to the seat mounts like GD suggested above?

All the track days I've done at Manfield have not required a fire extinguisher
The inter-marque series I entered required an extinguisher, and they wanted two bolts with non-tapering nuts (or was it tapering... damn), so I think as long as it's secure and easy to get to, you'll be fine.
The track day organiser should be able to steer you in the correct direction if you want to remove all uncertainty

Re: Fire Extinguisher Mounting
From a motorsport perspective, you also have to have big penny washers on the outside/underside of where the extinguisher is bolted so the bolts don't pull through in an accident. Mine is mounted in front of the drivers seat. It would be a lot easier to mount 2 x 1kg rather than a single 2kg.
Motorsport Manual states the following:
For hand-held extinguishers, a metal retaining system, incorporating a minimum of two(2) quick-release metal straps, secured to the structure of the vehicle by a minimum of two(2) self locking ISO 8.8 M6 bolts with panel washers is required. All hand-held extinguishers shall be positioned within easy reach of the occupant/s while in their normally seated position.

Does that mean if you have a harness, you basically need it on your seat?85AW20v wrote:All hand-held extinguishers shall be positioned within easy reach of the occupant/s while in their normally seated position.

It doesn't say belted in, just normally seated so I would think in reach without being belted in. It would be difficult to unlatch it to get it out if it was anywhere on the passengers side.....
