Squeaky shift cables

Post by tw2 »

What is the solution to squeaky shift cables. Mine does so when I move the gear knob to the right only from centre. I took the cable off the shifter to ensure it was nothing to do with that. Is pulling them apart a good solution? Re-lube with something?

Or buy new ones? This seems to be the only option that isn't $500. https://mr2heaven.com/collections/clutc ... ter-cables

S54 and E153 cables the same?

You should be able to lube them up with the correct lubricant. I'm not sure what that is but possibly a spray grease.

Have you isolated the squeak to the cable near the shift lever?

Yes, it is the cable on the left which selects 1-2 or 5-R. I pulled the cable in and out by hand while disconnected from the gear shifter just to rule that out.

I might go back tomorrow and just make sure the large C clips are definitely ok. It is strange it only makes the noise when pulling the cable out out not pushing it in, ie it only squeaks when moving the shifter to the 5-R side from centre but not when going to the 1-2 side.

Try some dry lube first

Might be a bit noisy where the cable enters the sheath under center console. With console removed have a look to view the angle as its enters through shifts. By using a simple 'drop plate' the alignment can be corrected and cables move more freely.

For lubrication I tend to use either Red grease or Lithium white as both come in a spray can with extended nozzle. Easy enough to poke the nozzle into sheath and squirt grease down annulas. Being on the high end it should migrate down through rest of cable.
