Turbo options and opinions

Post by motorheadsw20 »

Howdy everyone :)

So the time has come for me to look for a new Turbo. Currently running TA3410 (.49 AR on the turbine side .70 AR compressor side) which still goes well but i'm after earlier/faster spool and was wondering what people's opinions are on these two candidates

GTX3071R Gen2 (.63AR turbine) https://www.garrettmotion.com/racing-an ... 1r-gen-ii/
G25-550 (.72AR turbine) https://www.garrettmotion.com/racing-an ... s-g25-550/
GTX2860R (this is one recommended by Garrett's boost adviser)

I run a T3 cast iron manifold (which i love since the bolts were coming off the steam pipe one I had before) - so the VBand on the G25 means it'll need a bit of welding/adapter whereas the 3071 will be straight fit and the 2860R should be straight fit too. Running external wastegate/BMIC as well - so free float is a must.

I'll be going with 268 duration cams as well - so hopefully boost comes on even sooner.

I haven't delved into compressor maps due to my lack of understanding there (tried this and got lost https://www.garrettmotion.com/wp-conten ... pert-1.pdf :D) - but any suggestions/recommendations/food for thought are most welcome :D

Have you considered the borg warner EFR range. Faster spool, lightest assembly. Also available with V-band. EFR6758 would be worth a look.

The G25 would be the best all round performer out of that lot, it is a generation newer than the GTX gen 2. All of those also come with T25 flange if you wanted to go that way. Of course this all depends on where you want to make full boost in the rev range, in which gear and peak power potential.
