trans issue

Post by Crawls »

Hey guys, i replaced the fluid in the trans today. I have noticed that before i changed it, the car was sluggish in accelerating, and i hoped it would be better after the fluid change, but its not.
Im not sure if there is something else i have not come across yet, but thought i would ask.

When the car is warmed up, i put trans into any gear (D,2,L) and put my foot down and it kinda bogs down. It does go, but not as well as it should.

Any ideas??

What did your trans fluid look and smell like when removed? What fluid did you replace with and did you do internal filter?

Hey Jim, the fluid was black but didn't smell. I replaced it with penrite dx3 trans fluid. I haven't done the internal filter yet. That has to wait until lockdown is over.

Being that bad I hope you didn’t cook a valve or damage torque converter. Hard to say what issue is unless you could pull some codes for a clue.

Before we took it off the road it was working fine, and it hasn't moved in 12 years. I'm wondering if it needs a run to clean it out, especially since I changed fluid.

Might pay to take for a run and then change fluid again. At best you only get about 1/2 drained as most is stuck inside torque converter and valve body. I used the full synthetic type by Penrite which is slightly more expensive. Did you get any metal shavings on the drain plug?

Hey Jim, no metal shavings.

I thought as much, drain and refill is only a little over 3liters. And apparently a full fill is about 8.

You will get another 1-2 litres if pan is dropped and filter changed. Pays to run it for a short time when draining to get fluid from torque converter .

I ran it today, still sluggish of the mark but still managed to leave a hole on front lawn. Haha, oops. Will run it every few days and hope whatever is wrong will rectify itself. Then I can drop sump and change filter.

Look what turned up today.

Didn't know it was classed as essential. Pity I don't have enough oil. Order this after my last post.

I bought the same part for my 96NA. Was quite easy to fit and change oil.

That's good to hear. If I can get an essential delivery of oil, I will do it early.

Well I gave it a bit of a run today. Something seems to have changed in transmission. Put it in drive, or any gear for that, and it lurches. Didn't do that the other day. So it is starting to feel like an auto now. Will keep driving it around the house a bit more before I drop fluid again.
