Best place to get engines with loom and ecu

Post by RustyKettle »

Evening everyone,

I've been lurking for the last couple of months, slowly building up the information needed to complete a v6 conversion on my N/a 1992 sw20 and am starting to collect the parts required.

However, I am finding it difficult to find a complete engine, loom and ecu bundle for a 3vz or 1mz with a manual ecu at any pickaparts or engine supplier.

If anyone has information for the best place to find 3vz or 1mz in the upper north island it would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

What he said.

I also don't believe you need a manual ECU. V6 manuals are quite rare. Previous auto/manual swaps I've done you just bridge the park switch out so it starts and otherwise its fine. I haven't done this on a Camry however.

Whole car is the way to go, or find someone who is parting one privately. A wrecker will love to sell you a long block with all the other bits separately

That is unbelievably helpful information, much easier to find autos. Cheers for that.

Exactly! I just hope that is the case with a Camry ECU, but it shouldn't be hard. (Perhaps do a bit further research) Usually the Engine ECU only controls the engine and the auto trans is a separate ECU.
Good luck! :D

Another option is an after market ECU. I had a mega squirt on my na 3VZ that put down 196whp. I believe they are stock 180 at the flywheel. So costs a bit more but some good gains. I also have the same ECU running a turbo version of that engine now. So it can be flexible for future mods.

But as per above, if you have the space and time/effort a parts car is a good option.
I bought a Camry with 180ks for $700 that had rust preventing a WOF. After removing what I wanted I sold the rest of the car for $400.

I agree with aftermarket EMS if you can swing it. There are so many plug and play options now for good prices. Certainly opens up future possibilities with any performance or even economy mods.
