removing backrest seat upholstery?

Post by ansys »

I've got the same issue that every old MR2 seems to have with the upholstery tear on the drivers side. I want to do some sort of repair to it to at least stop the spread of the tear. I figure this might be easier with the seat cover off?? Are these easy to remove? Is there a better or easier way to patch this hole?

To remove the cover you need to unclip the material from the seat. There are some ring clips that you need to bend to the open position and they can be very hard to put back on without damaging them. There are also 2 rubber bands that these clips hold, you don't want to cut the bands when clipping them back on.

Alright, got the seat cover off, now what, haha. Any advice on how best to repair it? or any recomendations for an upholsterer in Auckland?

What's your budget? What's an acceptable repair? This material is so faded nothing will match. It's either you replace the panels that are damaged or you patch it and make it stand out.

Does a pair of $50 seat covers from Super Cheap Auto count?

I don't really want to dump too much money into this car. I'm thinking maybe try and stitch it together as best i can and patch it underneath??
Not keen on the cheap seat covers, they never end up looking good in my opinion. I have seen some nice mr2 specific after market seat covers out there, but don't think i want to pour money into this mr2.

See if you can iron it out flat, pull/push the material together and glue a patch on the inside of a material that's the same sort of colour, like an old pair of jeans. You might have been able to do that with it still in place.....
See ya

Well, I've finished stitching it up as you can see in the before/ after photos. It's alright from far, but far from perfect. At least it's not as obvious as before and should hopefully help slow the advance of any more tearing
