Re: Chasing oil leaks
Give your engine a clean, then you can see where it is coming from. Hopefully it's an easy one.

Re: Chasing oil leaks
Alright, so i tried cleaning up a bit of oil then took the car for a short spin. When i got back i let the engine run for a minute or two on the driveway, revved it a bit. I got three small drops of oil that seem to have run down to the lip of the oil pan, and seem to be coming from the area in the photo. I didn't notice anything obvious up top by the valve cover, but there's a lot of bits up there so not the easiest to inspect.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: Chasing oil leaks
That could very well be from your oil pump, but I am not 100% on that. I think it will take some more investigating. That photo has the leak running down the side of oil pump, but as you say there is lot up top in that area too.

Re: Chasing oil leaks
Yeah I second that. Hard to be 100% from a picture, but seems like it is oil pump and running along the lip of the pan. That's what mine does. I suggest putting it on stands and leaving it idle. Go under with a rag and a torch, wipe away the old oil and just watch. Might take awhile being that light. But then you will know.

Re: Chasing oil leaks
That is definitely the oil pump shaft seal. There is actually a drain point for the oil and other dirt and water that might have go into the cam belt cover to get out. You can see if is not coming from the oil pump o ring flange but instead from underneath which means oil has come out the shaft seal and run down the face of the oil pump flange and then along the lower main housing and out onto the oil pan seam. It might look like the seam is leaking but it rarely does.

Re: Chasing oil leaks
Thanks all for that. Now the next question I guess... how much of a pain is it to fix it (effort and cost), or with it leaking so little (knock on wood), would you just leave it be for now?
I don't exactly have access to the best equipment or space to be able to take the engine out to work on it. Is access OK enough if I take the right rear wheel off and the wheel well cover? Any good tutorials out there? Alternatively, how much would it cost to get a trusted mechanic to work on it? I get the feeling whoever supposedly worked on this engine about 30k km ago didn't exactly do the best of jobs in every area...

Haha, not easy. If you do that, you might as well do a cambelt change. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube. I have not done it, yet.

Re: Chasing oil leaks
You do the work from the top and bottom, and like Keith pointed out, it's a full cam belt job to get to this seal as the oil pump runs off the cam belt.
I've done about 5 in the car now. It take's quite some time to do and I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself if you have not done it before. Get someone in who can help and guide you through it. Key is to take off the AC belt tensioner pulley and brackets to get the lower cam belt cover off with the engine mount. That is one of the hard parts with these cam belt jobs, and lining up the belt.
You need a few tools you might not have like a pulley puller with the right bolts to thread into the pulley. Long M8x1.25mm works.
I'm one for doing as much work on my car as I can so not trying to put you off but getting help for this project is best.
So while you are in there you can do all these if your budget extends this far.
Valve Cover Seal No1
Valve Cover Seal No2
Cam shaft seal No1
Cam shaft seal No2
Idler Bearing Tensioner No1
Idler Bearing No2
Tensioner
Cam belt
Crank Front Seal
Oil Pump Shaft Seal
Oil Pump O ring
Water Pump
Thermostat
That's about $450 of parts if you get them from the right places. All OEM too which is best. Valve cover seals are not a must and need part of the intake manifold taken off.
But if your budget is only enough to fix this leak an nothing else then you can get these parts.
Crank Front Seal
Oil Pump Shaft Seal
Oil Pump O ring
That's about $20 in parts plus $7 shipping from Amayama.com
Little trick for new people. The thermostat does not come with the o ring needed to seal it BUT if you buy a full sealed water pump kit from Toyota you get it plus all the other seals for the pump. So with the water pump, be careful what you are getting as it might also be missing 2 other o rings and a gasket for the rear housing if you only buy the front half.

Re: Chasing oil leaks
Thanks again! That list is especially helpful. Yeah, i figured it would be a pain in the butt. Sounds like i should just leave it be until the cam belt is due or the leak gets much worse.
Anyone know of any mechanics good with MR2s in auckland for when that day comes? How much would getting a mechanic to address that long list set me back? $1000 or so?

Re: Chasing oil leaks
That list is for a GEN3. Sorry, forgot to cross check it. Your engine won't have a tensioner as the bearing has a spring on it instead.
