Fuel Smell after WOT

Post by GlanzaAtHeart »

Hi there team,

My Gen 4 has encountered yet another issue! Who would've predicted it....

Every time I floor it I get a distinct smell of fuel after.

I have a DW200 255lph fuel pump with no regulator on my Gen 4 3SGTE, and no charcoal canister either. The charcoal canister should only effect the car sitting afterwards (as it only effects the tank breathing) if I recall correctly.

I do have an AFR gauge, I'm about 10.5-11 on full throttle, 14.5-15.0 ish on idle.

Would a fuel pressure regulator fix this?

Cheers team.

Is this just a recent event? That AFR doesn't sound too bad for WOT TBH.

Sorry I don't know your setup, but from memory there's an FPR on the end of the stock fuel rail. That plus the MAP are the most likely culprits in a stock setup to cause over fuelling.

Play it safe and check for leaks too if you've touched the fuel system and you haven't already

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, that ratio is still rich

I would think that without an FPR you would be overfueling when you come off throttle as rail pressure would remain high. You won’t see this on the AFR gauge but will result in unburnt fuel going into exhaust. Probably will hear popping sound if engine braking going downhill.

I’d install an AFPR that uses vacuum line to control regulation. Can even adjust to reduce fuel supply that 3sgtes are programmed to run at. Can even plumb in a gauge for checking and setting base pressure. Tomie makes a kit just like this.

I suspect there is no aftermarket FPR. The one on the rail is still there.

Ah yes,

So the one on the stock rail is still there.

No popping or anything, not really any backfires or flame from over fuelling.

It most likely is dumping more fuel in (Now that I'm running 16psi too) so like yeah. Maybe it's that. Maybe it's the charcoal canister.

I'll do some more digging on the internet this week and see what I can do next weekend.

Do you have a charcoal canister? If not then the fuel tank is just venting to atmosphere and I have heard of this before and the culprit was that.

For my build I'm keeping the OEM Caldina system in place to try prevent this.
