Please help with aftermarket steering wheel
I also posted this on mr2oc but thought it might be more of a JDM thing.
My horn did not work when I bought my car (1990 3sge). It had an aftermarket steering wheel. I pulled it apart today to try and work out what was wrong. I found this.... it is the back of the horn button with only one wire attached (white one) which came from the spiral wire thing.
Here is where it comes through into the aftermarket hub.
This is the spiral wire with the white one coming out and the 5 (not 4) wire plug below it which slides into the bottom of the spiral assembly.
Finally the spiral assembly removed.
Questions
The white wire is a ground right?
The 5 wire plug has a pink, green, brown, white and black wire. Is the green probably the horn wire which needs to be tapped into?
Do I need to use this green wire to make some sort of contact as is described here http://www.scottbarton.net/MR2/SteeringWheel/
Is the green +12V? I might have the wrong boss kit/hub courtesy of the previous owner but I am sure I can make something if need be.
I don't have cruise control or air bag etc, are these 5 wires even being used? I do have the turning fog lights but they are not working so if they are from that then I might as well just cut the plug off to rewire the horn.
Thanks for any help. Warrant is due next month, I just hope they also don't notice my cracked swaybar bushes.

Thanks for the reply. I would prefer to keep the original button. I was thinking instead of making a metal touch surface like most people do I could precoil the 12V wire around the hub to ensure it was long enough lock to lock and leave it. Is this a really bad idea?
According the wiring diagrams it aleady has a 15A fuse in it in case something did go wrong.

the horn use's a negitive or ground trigger
so that wire will ground through the horn button to the steering colum to give a ground to the horn RELAY.
that wire is long enough as is. the bit it comes out of, on the column moves with the wheel(so the wire only has to come out to the button, not allow for the movement as well)
check the fuse in the drivers footwell. then the relay in the frunk(front trunk)passengers side.

Thanks for the advice. I realised last night that I needed to check the fuses etc. When I touch that white wire on the column nothing happens. So the white wire is the one which needs to be grounded right? Rather than being the ground wire?
From reading other writeups from usdm turbo 2's with PS, cruise control and air bag it seemed a lot more complicated. They gave the impression that the wire already there was the ground wire and that the horn wire needed to be extended from white plug and somehow create a precoiled wire or a metal contact on a metal ring to make it work.
I will try artificially grounding the relay and then test the resistance from the relay to that white wire after checking the fuse. If I had done the steering wheel myself it would have been easy, working out someone elses mess is always a lot harder.

Thanks for the help, I figured it out. The white wire used a female blade clip which was shoved in the 3 prong stock plug which went to the steering wheel. The previous owner got it wrong, the +12 for the horn relay used the first of the 3 prongs whereas they had the white wire on the 2nd and 3rd with a large blade clip.
I bought some 2mm blade clips, crimped a new wire for the 1st prong and wired it to the horn switch. Then the switch has a small length of metal sticking out the side which grounds it to the hub. Unfortunately this did not have proper contact when installed and tightened down but did work fine when loosely installed. I had to run a ground wire to the other terminal of the horn switch and bolt it to the hub elsewhere.
So now the horn goes and everything rotates with the wheel correctly and the +12 wires are all shrink wrapped in case they ever come off, the horn wont sound.

Haha yeah I don't think that is really what you want especially at a busy intersection in town. Probably not a bad idea for me to check my gt4 also. That has a momo wheel but the previous owner added it so who knows how that was done, at least the horn does work.
