Our Caldina GT-4 has them as standard equipment.

And yes they do have that really bizarre clear-cut "light versus dark" thing when driving at night, that DravidDavid described.. First set of headlights I've ever driven with that were like that.

As for an MRS having them as standard? Dunno but if the Caldina did from 2002, then I'd imagine it'd be feasible for the later MRS to have had them. However they are not listed here: http://www.oemxenonshop.com/Toyota-Xeno ... ement.html

Caldina Gt-Four was a high spec model (sold for way more than a MR-S), and HID were still an option on the lower spec GT-FOURs, while the top spec (N edition), and the top spec non-turbo models (ZT) got them as standard. Don't blow a bulb, genuine bulbs from amayama are around $200 ea for bulbs by the time you land them in NZ, I'd hate to know what Toyota NZ would charge you for them.. toyodiy suggests USD$392 each as a guideline  .

No, the MR-S didn't get them, I checked toyodiy. No BULB, DISCHARGE HEADLAMP, for MR-S. Not even as an option.
That's correct. You cannot legally install HID kits into non HID lights. The heat generated by the bulbs is much greater than the lens was designed for and can be hazardous.
No, nothing to do with heat. They aren't as hot as standard halogen bulbs, they are lower power. 38W vs 55W or more. Please let that internet myth die.

Yup, you're absolutely right. My bad.
Here's the snippet from the VIRM:

"A high-intensity discharge (HID or Xenon HID) conversion kit consists of an HID bulb with a high voltage power output or ‘ballast’ which fits into the original headlamp unit in place of the original bulb with no change to the headlamp lens, reflector or housing.

It is illegal to fit an HID conversion kit to a vehicle as it brings the headlamp out of standards compliance by producing poor beam patterns and light that is far too bright to be safe. The bulbs can also produce light that is noticeably blue and not the required substantially white or amber colour. Vehicle and headlamp manufacturers do not permit this modification, and these kits cannot be LVV certified.

It is permitted to replace a complete halogen headlamp unit with a complete HID headlamp unit."

Don't think MR-S factory come with HID but there is two different lens number on facelift headlight, even the toyota parts cataloge has different parts number as well. I am not sure what's the different between them.
