1zz-fe engines made for Celica T23 and MR2 mk3 have a larger intake valve (+1mm) cylinder head compared to 1zz-fe engines for Corolla, Corolla Verso, Avensis, RAV4 or far east Corolla Altis variants. Plus a different ECU to run the larger valves properly. This is the reason for 129/130HP (normal 1zz) versus 143HP (Celica /MR2 1zz).
It wasn't clear whether this applies for JDM or US market, so have asked the OP for clarification.
Would anyone have a good source for the JDM car specs?
Identifying models with 140HP 1zz would presumably mean they're the ones fitted with the larger valves (?)
I'm in the market for a 1zz and the larger valves (if true) would come in handy

Put an Exedy performance clutch in. Different car.I am impressed.
Watch out next run!!
hi, u gutted the main cat or the pre cats? wondering how to gut the main cat without cutting it open. cheers
Hi MY info was the engines are the same and its only the factory they are made in that is different
1ZZ-FED[edit]
The 1ZZ-FED is similar to the 1ZZ-FE but is built separately in the Shimoyama plant. Toyota's advertised power output is 148 bhp (150 PS; 110 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 136 lb⋅ft (184 N⋅m) of torque at 4,000 rpm. It uses MPFI, VVT-i[5] and light weight, cast rods.
Applications:
Toyota Celica GT
Toyota MR2 Spyder
Toyota Wish 1.8
WiLL VS 1.8
and that's why a wish motor is an exact swap
1ZZ-FE[edit]
1ZZ-FE
The 1ZZ-FE is a 1.8 L (1,794 cc) version built in Buffalo, West Virginia. Its production in Cambridge, Ontario was discontinued in December 2007. Bore X stroke of 79 mm × 91.5 mm (3.11 in × 3.60 in). Compression ratio is 10.0:1. Output is between 120 bhp (122 PS; 89 kW) at 5,600 rpm with 122 lbf⋅ft (165 N⋅m) of torque at 4,400 rpm, 140 bhp (142 PS; 104 kW) at 6,400 rpm with 126 lbf⋅ft (171 N⋅m) of torque at 4,200 rpm. It uses MPFI, has VVT-i (1998-99 1ZZ engines don't have VVT-i), and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods, one-piece cast camshafts, and either a TRD cast aluminum intake manifold or a molded plastic intake manifold.[3][4]

Apparantly the cat problem doesn't exist on the really Late engines . IT was related to the way the VVTI worked and the disintegration of the cat from oil blow by and then the pieces being able to be sucked into the engine.
I have however gutted the precats with a drill and a cutter and a piece of rebar

thanks, i want to gut the main cat. may have to cut up a window.
Thanks . Must be some villages somewhere that have lost their idiots.......................................Some of the guys at wrecking yards and engine importers are just plain thick
Hi Mike,
How did you source your 1ZZ? I'd be grateful for some pointers. I was looking at a 1zz from a Corolla, but it looks like the dip stick is in the wrong place, so I assume there are different versions.
Any advice you can give (especially the best place to source a motor) would be greatly appreciated.
People typically get the 1zz from any car then swap out the (few) parts that are different from their original MR-S engine.
The 2003+ engines are said to have an updated piston design.

There are 3 different piston numbers, not sure what changes they made. These are the Japanese car part numbers for the ZZW30 only. Not sure about elsewhere in the world.

There are slight differences but if you do have things like the dip stick you can change it over from the ZZW30 1ZZ to the ZZE*** engine.
Thanks GDII, I really appreciate your input. Do you mean I can take the dip stick tube off my old 1ZZ and fit that to the replacement 1ZZ?
My mechanical ability is limited to oil, filter, spark plug & brake pad changes... and lightbulbs... so I'm not sure what you mean by ZZE*** (google wasn't much help).
I hope I can find a later model 1ZZ that doesn't have the oil burning problem.

Hi psyguy, thanks!
You just answered my question(s) that I wrote to GDII. Good to know that they fixed the oil problem after 2003.
I don't suppose you know where to go to find a low mileage 2003+ motor?

Sorry, I should have just said MR-S and Corolla. ZZE is a Corolla fitted with a ZZ engine. E is Toyotas Corolla chassis designations as W is the MR2. The asterisks mean the generation of car such as 120, 122 or 123. for the corolla that the ZZ was fitted to. Normally 2 or 3 numbers.

Try the local wreckers... you probably want to ask by the car model rather than the engine code, i.e. "1.8l Corolla" rather than the "1ZZ engine".
You can look up online for all the Toyota models that had 1zz in them and compile a list.
