I've got news from the UK guy (Lewis Winpenny):

Thankfully I finally got a quote this morning so the prices for shipping in Pounds sterling are:

Air freight to your door (7-10 days) £3950 (7415 NZD)

Sea freight to agents warehouse (10-12weeks) £3150 (5833 NZD)

Sea freight to your door (10-12 weeks) £3325 (6157 NZD)

That doesn’t include the cost of the hardtops themselves but that cost is for 4 hardtops shipped.

Tops typically range between £500-£650 (925 -1200 NZD) with the full fitting kit

I have black and pre facelift 1d0 silver in stock at present but I can source any other U.K. Toyota colour for you.
(End quote)

What do you all say?
yep too much for me too, I'm out too sorry :(

I've talked to Lewis a bit more. The shipping company he uses suggested to pack only two hardtops in one package rather than four. Not sure why. Each two-tops package would be 1.5m x 1.4m x 0.7m and 50 kg. We could assume 4 tops would be 1.5m x 1.4m x 1.4m and 100kg.
If anyone has any contacts in the shipping industry and would like to enquire about the cost if we organised it from our end, that would be good.
Lewis would be happy to package the tops ready for shipping. He's in Stockport, Cheshire, England. I have the full address if needed.

I would be keen to join a hardtop groupbuy if the shipping ends up being alright.

Just buy a car out of Japan with a hardtop fitted. Take the hardtop off and part out the car or sell it as is. Cheap hardtop. One sold last week for 174k yen ($2500) with the auction house fee.

I haven't quite given up so have contacted another on-seller in the UK.
He basically came back with a similar quote of ~NZ$3k
He's offered some insight into the cost which I quote below:

"All our tops are sent air freight. Sea freight to New Zealand and Australia is a nightmare, you can't use normal packaging due to the heat as it crosses the equator and the risk of mould and bacterial growth.

The shipping cost includes the labour and materials for manufacturing purpose built plywood shipping crates as well as the courier costs. The courier costs for NZ and Australia are nearly double that of the USA.

... {The tops} are getting rarer in the UK now."
