Olaf's '92 MR2 GT

Post by ClanFever »

Hey guys, poor old Ian from our club has had a bad time with this car, spent a few bucks on it getting a new gearbox and wof for the lower end to go. I got it for a steal, as I'm going to give it new life!!

Got incredibly fast on the way home! Very good considering I was under the power of 3 and 1 seized... Found the passenger window switch is busted, couldn't get the window to go up without giving it direct power. Couple other bits and pieces need some minor TLC.

Now for the hard decision. Do I put my N/A out of my current MR2 in this one, or do I sell my other one and turbo this one? Hmmmm!

Swap the engine over will give you a idea of whats involved in doing a swap plus your other one is a HARD top more suited for track work

I was thinking of toning down the track work, I do enjoy them but I find doing a windy road even better. Targa top with sounds seems better for this

So I've decided to keep the red one and turbo it, turn it into some kind of ultimate grand touring car, something you can have a bit of fun in but very comfortable long distance. So all the interior is staying this time!! The sounds are excellent, and this weekend I've moved all the good bits out of the green one, and into the garage/red one. Time to wof and sell the green one!! Chewy is down in Welly and came and gave me and Russell a hand! I've convinced Russell to come along to one of our runs when his ute is going, ford courier with 1UZ

Sticking close though, father in law now has it, may bring it to future runs! So it also means I'll be the one fixing it when he breaks it...

Got the cambelt/waterpump on the turbo motor this weekend, now have to drop the blown one out and get about making sure this thing will work... here is hoping!

Oh man, we should find a way to link this forum to facebook... update it there but not here!! My bad - 3 weeks ago

So car is engineless now... got my buddy coming around to put in the new alternator and starter on the turbo motor, and then just gotta get the intake on and all piped up and it'll be ready... unless there is something I forgot which there will be.

As for the car, still gotta drain the coolant (completely forgot), get rid of all the AC stuff (as I'm not keeping it), change the fuel tank (or at least just the fuel pump), and sort out my electrical speedo... as a mechanical speedo gearbox is going in. Plus now I've discovered that there are more then suspension and brake differences between gen 1 and 2 sw20s, so I may need to play around with the body and/or engine looms... lovely!

Such slow progress... real shame but sucks as the car is 1 hour drive from me so it only sees me on weekends, and half those weekends I'm super busy. Plus I'm not the best mechanically and most the jobs can't be done on my own... trying to learn but it's always new stuff and need someone to show me first! If anyone in the Welly region has a weekend day free and works for a box of beers or car parts, feel free to contact me!!

All done, it'll be moved really easily now. Can't wait till it's running, hard stuff is over just the minor stuff now. Thanks tons Russell, Colin and Phil for the help today, a fun way to spend a sunny and cold Saturday!

Progress on this thing is really slow considering I only get about 6 hours with it a week.

17x7 and 17x8 TSRs. 215/40/17 re002s up front, 235/40/17 goodyear eagle f1s down the back. Can't wait till I'm doing 180 down Manfield!!
