Re: Olaf's '92 MR2 GT
It's misfiring to the point of not be able to drive it with any amount of power. Might be something simple, on the other hand could be related to the water leak (perhaps compression loss due to blown headgasket). Going to have to look for vaccum leaks and any fuel problems too.

Head gasket will cause this if water is getting in to the cylinders.

Re: Olaf's '92 MR2 GT
Very much afraid this is what has happened. It will stop if I manage to get the boost up and higher rpms. As possibly there is more revs and combustions then amounts of water being let in. Perhaps this is why it always misfired a bit, and now it's gotten worse.GDII wrote:Head gasket will cause this if water is getting in to the cylinders.

Stop driving it or you'll damage the head and block beyond repair. Also get it fixed. If you leave it too long the head and block will get pitted and need to be thrown out.

Yeah I went straight home when it started. Money bit of an issue as trying to save for a house, any way I can avoid it pitting if I leave it sitting till I fix it?GDII wrote:Stop driving it or you'll damage the head and block beyond repair. Re: Olaf's '92 MR2 GT
Not sure. This is from experience of a Diahatsu with an HD engine that we drove for a very long time without knowing the head gasket had gone. Only symptoms were cylinder 3 was missing and not burning the fuel sometimes. Eventually it started to show signs of something going wrong as it wouldn't turn off and the over flow bottle bubbled. Then I took off the head and found cylinder 3 had a blow gasket into the water jacket and some pretty epic pitting in both the head and block. I replaced the head gasket and it was running fine except using water. Then sold it. Went up to Pick a Part and found it there with rusty water stains all over the engine. Made it another 14000km after we sold it.
Others with more experience in building engines or repairing head gaskets will know more than I do.

Re: Olaf's '92 MR2 GT
Misfire was due to carboned up spark plugs. I cleaned them and it fixed it. I've now replaced them with new ones. And I've done an oil filter flush. I should have taken a photo of the old oil filter. It was ripped and dented to pieces by the time I got it off... the rubber had become glue...
Failed it's wof on front balljoints and rear control arms. A few hundy later and it has a wof. The same night, the alternator has probably packed up. Whining, smelly and voltameter won't rise. Got home with candles for headlights. Just my luck. Gotta obviously test it with a voltmeter but I'd say something has had it. My guess is that it relates to the cloud of smoke I had when I overheated at Manfield. Same spot in the car, so possibly something has just let go. Not sure until I do some tests and have a look in there, but I'm not confident...

Re: Olaf's '92 MR2 GT
I was going to make a thread asking if 3s-ge and 3s-gte alternators are interchangeable. Then I remembered, I'm pretty sure the one already on my car is from a 3s-ge... so that way I can use the one from my parts car. I think it was something to do with the bracket. My memory is shocking. I'll pull them out and have a look.
Edit: my crappy memory is coming back. When we had the motors out, the turbo alternator was dirty as hell and the NA one wasn't. So I had the NA one rebuilt. The brackets were different so we swapped them around. So I can only use NA alternators without changing the bracket.

Took it for a drive today. Alternator is charging however it whines on first startup, shuts up for the rest of the drive until you start it up again. Going to have to keep an eye (or ear) on it, it was only rebuilt 3000km ago...
Fuel gauge is semi faulty. Gets to about halfway between 1.4 and empty and stops moving. I got 50km on it that way before I chickened out. It moves far more frequently so I think the gauge is accurate, however it stops there (and whatever travel you normally get is left). As when I ran it out I must have had it sitting at that point for a good long while. Not really a problem, possibly good thing as if it ever got stolen and they drove it long distance they would run out if they waited till fuel light (haha suckers)
