Camerons '89 Adub
Hey all. I've recently become the proud owner of a fairly tidy '89 AW11! Interior is in pretty bloody good condition but the exterior could do with a bit of love and attention. Hopefully getting the bumper, bonnet and black trim repainted in a couple of weeks. After that i'll put some decent mags on her (5 spoke silvers?) and then we'll go from there but should be pretty mint then. Here are some photos after my brother and I spent the night clay baring, cutting and polishing it. It really needed it as I got it off a dealer up in Waipukurau who had it sitting in his yard unloved for about 9 months
Also suggestions on paint would be great. I'm thinking about doing a white/black 2-tone with gold/chrome mags, pretty much a copy of a photo some of you might have seen floating around. Either that or keep it white with maybe a few black details. Suggestions?
Cheers, Cameron

Love white mr2, the cleanest looking colour, the oem look with some nice dark rims to set it off, something like buddy club p1's, te37 ect. Always loved this one http://blog.retro-classics.co.nz/?p=4162" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Camerons '89 Adub
I had a look over that car about 5 weeks ago when I was passing through Waipukurau.
It looked like it was in ok condition even after sitting out in the weather unused for a length of time. I hope you got the price down abit as I thought it was a little high.

Be warned, panel is paint is insanely expensive, probably end up spending more that you paid for the car just on panel and paint for a decent job

Re: Camerons '89 Adub
Yea, thats what I'm worried about. I got quoted $500 for a bonnet, bumper and black trim respray. He's the same guy that did my brothers SW20 and it came out really well. If that turns out to be to expensive i think i'll be leaving it mostly white with the odd black bit.

Nice pick up! Looks exsactly the same as mine haha
I'm going two tone after I fit an aero tech front lip. Was just going to get the black done in 3M wrap as it's far cheaper then paint!

If I had the AW in your pic I'd paint the roof black. Makes it look a bit lower I think.

I remember that one being at the car yard when I last drove from Carterton to Napier 18 months ago. The price was too high and he wouldnt negotiate. Glad you got it cheaper.

Hmmm, not to sure about the black top. Gives me something more to think about though.
Wouldn't surprise me about it being in there 18 months, looked as if it hadn't been cleaned the whole time!

Simple / single colour can be nice.. but it's the contrast on the wheels that probably sets this one off.. not to mention the rest of the body stuff

No, I think the contrasting black roof looks terrible on an Adub. Just my humble opinion & personal taste. Leave the roof as is

Re: Camerons '89 Adub
Hey guys, quick update. I got a quote for painting the lower half black and it came out at $6-700 so i think i'll be doing that. The owner of the paint shop is having knee surgery at the moment so will hopefully book it all in next week. Does anyone know if that plastic bumpy bit along the sides, just below the dip can be easily removed? Sorry about the terrible description but I cant really think of how to describe it. I'll need to take it off or else it will look like crap if you just paint over it. Also, is there an easy way to remove the 3 stripe decals all around the car? Or else, again, it would look pretty bad. I'll end up putting it back on, it just needs to come off to be painted.
Cheers, Cameron

Re: Camerons '89 Adub
The 'plastic bumpy bit' is glued on pretty well - its pretty hard to take these off in a tidy manner especially if you want to re-use. If you did, perhaps a very flat very sharp blade and some gentle work? Or hit it with a heat gun and try and pull off and then clean up the glue?
For the stripes, best bet is to order a replacement set from twos'r'us if they still do them, not re-usable once taken off.
