Very cool. I assume you've extended one of the open source ECU software projects? I can't tell which. In case you didn't know, speeduino is starting to take off.

Thanks. My ECU project isn't an extension of any pre-existing project, rather it's a 'green fields' project that I started a long time ago. I started this project in its present form about 15 years ago. All the while it was destined for my AW11 ;). Infact it was the AW11 MR2 that I bought in 1998 that really stoked the fire to get me creating an engine management system. The ECU system I now have consists of
  • XML files to model data structures used by the ECU (which is transformed in C/H source)
  • ECU firmware written almost entirely in C (with a HAL layer so can port to maybe ARM CM4 in the future)
  • C# windows boot-loader app
  • C# windows configuration editor
  • Schematic and PCB design which I did in 2006 in Altium.
I learn C, C#, XSLT and what to do in order to make an engine work nicely, in order to make all this happen!

Wow, that's a lot of work, very impressive. I've always thought about doing the same, but I think you've proven the work is immense and ECUs can be had relatively cheap now

Yeah, that's for sure! These days you do it for the love of it only. Back in '98 I thought the Link was too expensive at about $1000..hahaha. How hard can it be I thought....well a lot harder than I initially planned! I guess it turned into a bit of a lifetime hobby for me.

So here is the engine in its dyno ready state. The eventual plan is a 6PK main pulley, and with 5 ribs we're on the the verge of belt slipping.

And here is the whole engine

So with around 1 bar of boost here is the result -- its almost a 4AGZE x 2 (145hp & 130lb-ft vs 286hp, 250lbft),
which is a great result. Not too crazy, but still a big bump over stock! Possibly have some belt slip occurring above 6000 rpm
-- its a new belt and we previously tightened it for this run, but maybe not enough.

That's going to be fun to drive
Boosted cars are like hot women.
A little edgy, every guy wants one,
some guys can't handle them,
and if you throw a little alcohol in them they'll rock your world.

Yeah, it should be great fun. LOL -- a couple of celebratory donuts are in definitely order, as are a few 0 to 100kph runs! Its been 25+ plus years that I've been working towards this idea -- gotta have some celebration of my obsession. I'll be sure to post once I get the engine in the car!

A run on a hub or wheel dyno would give how much the actual drive train losses are too.

Yes, agree, totally going to do that, also for the fact that I'll have hopefully have a 6-rib pulley soon (going to cost an arm and a leg through) and also will tweak the tune a little bit (its more than safely rich). From what I understand 15% is a reasonable ballpark figure for a transverse FWD drive train.

The interior of my car - still need to tidy up the wires. This dash is a replacement as the original dash cracked. The dash wasn't crack when I bought the car, and not sure if it was the 'Armourall' spray or the Aussie sun or both, but I've had two different cars where dashes cracked and Armourall was used...hmm...could be coindcidence though. Would not want to live without an AFR gauge if you're playing with your engine!

I'm thinking to put the gauges in the glove box, I couldn't find a good place to fit the cables, nor did I want to cut up my center console.

You don't have to mount any gauges if write something to log the results and monitor the AFR :P It'll probably react faster than you too
