Cool. I'm just interested in which way your doing it. All the triggering for my Link G4 is off the cam angle sensor (24 tooth main, 1 tooth sync), and it's running sequential injection/ignition. Before I got the Link I was considering building my own custom ecu and writing the software to run it, as I didn't like the megasquirt ecus and their two injection/ignition outs. I was going to use a PIC18F4550 as the base, but I realized just how long it would take to build such a system (despite me being a C programmer), so I bought a Link instead.

If I was building something like you are, I would probably keep the cam sensor as the sync for sequential injection/ignition, and run a multi-tooth wheel (generic same spaced teeth) on the crank to pickup crank counts (and the time between them) relative to the sync signal, so that the crank degrees can be calculated. Then set the software to output 10 degrees spark, and set the offset in the software with a timing light.

It's very cool that you have written your own software to run the engine, I can't wait to see which way you end up going with it.

Yes, Toyota 1 in 720 sync + custom crank wheel is my direction next. Its taken a very long time to get the ECU software to where I want it..still more to do too!
As I know you can imagine, C programming is one thing, figuring out the pulse scheduling system and fuel / ignition control is another - the pulse scheduling stuff has taken months and several goes to figure out. Funny you mention the Link! In 1998, I thought what a rip off.....I'll make my own ECU.....I was young and more stupid than I am now :P. I bought my first manifold pressure sensor from the LINK place! Anyway it was fun and I learn't a bit...there was nothing like it when the engine started for the first time after spending 4 years of spare time writing the code! At the moment I'm pretty keen just to get the car sorted!!
Nick.

Agreed, there's no better feeling than to build something yourself and hear it running for the first time.

Awesome project and thanks you gave me an idea for my twincharge project, Will look at changing the inlet mani and sc inlet as your setup might be a whole lot better in my 4agzte. Suddenly pleased mine is taking so long :D

Well after a 3 year hiatus, the warrant is basically sorted, back on the road after a 3 years break looking forward to an MR2 drive some time!

4AGZE is stock, except for the previa SC14, big-port inlet manifold, Ebay water/air heat exchanger, home brew ECU, fuel system, electric water pump, custom remote thermostat and water plumbing.......ok so maybe not THAT stock.....but the engine is unopened at 130,000kms :)

The 9AGZE is still in progress.....sadly....but hopely we'll get there this year!!

Nice
Thanks for the update I have been wondering how things were going with the car :-)

Hey man. When (if) you got that car certed, did they say anything about your relay panel?

Howdy, the car is certed for wheels, brakes, suspension, steering wheel (cant remember what else of the top of my head). I had to get an emissions test when I brought it into the country (was living in Australia for a stint), The car has an LVV certificate.

Most recent mods -- change IC inlet piping -- old one kind of fouled on the coil packs /plug leads

I used a $5 Aliexpress elbow (I didnt weld this particular piece on)

Following getting the car roadworthy and WOF'd, the next upgrade should be the best....a quick recap......it's been about 7 years (don't ask!) in the making but I'm finally making some headway.

The basic engine specs :-
  • El cheapo water to air IC
    MRP built stroker 7AFE bottom end (90mm = 1878cc with 81.5mm bore)
Ported small port head with high lift cams and over-sized valves
Second hand Autorotor OA2087 twin screw charger
Walbro 255 pump / 560cc EVO injectors / Aeromotive Reg
Home brew ECU, which is going OK after 10 years of occasional tweaking
I'm guessing it should make close to twice the HP of a stock Supercharged AW11 (145hp stock). definitely not the best return on investment, but the point was to make the ultimate streetable SUPERCHARGED MR2, (without throwing hands in the air and turboing). Plan is to run it up on an engine dyno in the new year (2020) and get the damn thing installed finally.

Very cool, did you do DIY kit ECU or did you go full DIY? If so what chip?

I went full custom. Used at Atmel AVR Mega 128 chip. It's all leaded components -- it's a bit old school in several ways -- a project I started before ARM became ubiquitous! But I enjoyed the challenge and it doesnt really compromise on anything performance wise....And infact you could argue it is more advnaced than the 80's Toyota ECU which use an 8051 variant!!
