Tubbys SW V2.0

Post by mr2 Tubby »

So I thought I’d post up a new build thread as it's a totally new build.
The ct26 hybrid just wasn’t cutting it, so I decided to go to a new bigger turbo and a new stronger 5SGTE engine to support the extra power. I wanted to build a setup that can drive to the track do a few sprint races and drive home reliably.

Engine:
5SGTE 2.1L 87.5mm x 86mm (bore x stroke).
5SFE block, decked and cooling jackets machined to accept 3sgte head gasket.
88mm 3SGTE MLS head gasket 1.3mm thickness. For a squish of 1mm
ARP 2000 head studs.
Standard 3SGTE crank, crack tested, journals checked and polished, balanced.
Wiseco Custom 87.5mm pistons.
Standard Rods, ARP hardware, resized, balanced and crack tested.
ACL Race Bearings.
Blueprinted and balanced.
Rotating assembly balanced.
All balancing and machining completed by hytech engines.
Moroso baffled 6.5 litre sump.
ATS Racing High Volume oil pump.
Greddy catch can.
ATS racing 170degree thermostat.

Head:
Standard valves cut and seats cut.
Bowls blended, valves deshrouded.
Chamber volumes balanced within 0.5cc.
Kelford Pacaloy Valve Springs.
Kelford 270 Deg 9.6mm Lift Cams.
Adjustable Cam Gears.

Turbo/Intake/Exhaust:
ATS throttle body intake.
Throttle Body coolant bypass.
100mm aftermarket sidemount intercooler.
9" puller fan.
Standard exhaust manifold, ceramic coated with port matched turbo adapter.
Ceramic coated turbo and intake manifold.
TD06 20G turbo, externally gated. Re-plumbed to downpipe.
38mm Tial wastegate.
3inch downpipe.
3inch exhaust.
TVIS removed, spacer port matched and holes welded, intake manifold flow blended.
K&N 12 inch intake filter.
3inch turbo inlet.
Custom progressive water/methanol injection kit, controlled by ECU master EMU. Parameters set to ramp up with RPM and Boost. PWM controlled through DC mosfet solid state relay. Failsafe setup for system overpressure and low fluid level.

Fuelling:
Walbro 255 in tank fuel pump.
850cc top feed injectors.
Top feed 3sge rail, modified to suit.
Factory fuel pressure regulator.

Ignition:
BKR7E spark plugs.
New factory oem black ignition leads.
New dizzy cap and rotor.
Stronger coil and ignitor.

Engine Management:
ECU master EMU. Plug and play adapter to factory harness.
Knock control.
2 step launch control.
Timing/boost corrections based on IAT/CLT.
PID boost control though solenoid.
PWM controlled water/methanol injection.
Engine bay harness tucked, and fuse box relocated to trunk corner.

Drivetrain:
E153 with Mechanical Clutch LSD.
Exedy 5puk sprung clutch with high clamp motorsport pressure plate. (Old autoclutch one was like chalk!)
CRW upgraded inner CV joints.

Chassis/Brakes:
17" Diezel D1r rims staggered 7"/8" fitment
Body painted in Audi brilliant red.
Gen 3 tail light conversion.
Clear front corner lights.

RBF600 brake fluid.
KYB suspension.

Interior:
VDO oil temperature gauge.
VDO water temperature gauge.
VDO oil pressure gauge.

Very impressive especially with the high quality and attention to detail of your work. Mine looks like a work hack in comparison.

Thanks for sharing.

That IS impressive. This is one very detailed build. I love how you have cleaned everything and painted or polished it. The colour scheme I can agree with too. Simple and using a limited amount of colours.

I agree, that is one very nice looking engine. Well done on the new engine build.

One thing I noticed, is the engine a true 5SGTE? I only ask because the stroke on 5S engines is 90.9mm, not 86mm like the description says. The main reason for using a 5S block is to use the 5S crank, but your description says it's a 3SGTE crank. What I'm seeing is a 3SGTE with just a 5S block.

I'm confused, can you set me straight?

That's exactly what you are seeing. It is still a 5SGTE, just not a stroker, I chose to go this way as it is an over square design, the rod ratio is better, which generally converts to a more rev happy engine, more high rpm power, and less wear and tear due to the side loading of pistons with a larger stroke. The main reason people use the 5SGE block is the added strength around the water pump area and the thicker cylinder walls, not just for the stroke. You can put a 5SGE crank in a 3SGTE block, the deck heights are the same. By not stroking it I've essentially got a much more reliable, rev happy 3SGTE with another 100cc of displacement.

Oh cool, sounds like something I should do, as I have cams that like revs because the power is still increasing above the stock redline of 7200rpms (mine is set to 7500rpm, just because).

Wow, awesome, Your ve definitely set the benchmark for all of us modified guys. Be great to see it on the track. Are you at Hampton on the 5th June? How does the T06-20G respond. It a pretty big beastie. Do you see any lag and when does it start to spool? It will definitely have no issue once it gets to 5000rpm and above, what it feel like mid range around 3000 - 5000rpm? Cheers

Cheers guys. Missed hampton, hope to get it there again at some point. The TD06 isn't really fully spooled till 4200, but it still makes more power half spooled than a ct20b at 18psi at 3500rpm. It certainly isn't what I call laggy, maybe spool is a couple of hundred rpm slower than a modern ball bearing turbo. It revs all the way to 8200 now, so the turbo is fully spooled for the same amount of revs as a ct20b on a stock revving 3sgte.

Sure does look like a really nice build there Shane. Very nice indeed.

Maybe you should aim for Puke at the end of July?

Thanks, yeah what's going on there, looks like the gt memberships the only option, kinda scared to ask myself, but has anyone asked the cost?
Puke might be an option, not my favorite track, too easy too run into a wall.

Taupo might be the best bet then... pretty safe track. Just a bit of extra expense there and back esp if u stay some place overnight.

But I do know a hellishing fun back road there and back...
