Very strange. Should ask Rueban what its there for.
If its not fried could always measure the resistance across terminals. Looks fairly small to drive motor so wouldn't be surprised if one of them is cooked.

This is normal for a Gen 3, Toyota improved the oil pump from the Gen 2 engines.clawnz wrote:Could it have a performance oil pump installed at some point, as it never, even when hot, drops below 20psi at idle. And runs about 60psi when driving.

Thanks Jason. That explains that then.
Now here is a picture of what wire whatever it is was spliced into.
The pink small wire going into the top of the pump motor.

Re: 1996 MR2 GT-S
What colour wire does the pink one plug into? The wiring diagram doesn't show the wire colours on the motor itself, just to the plugs from the body harness.
Just trying to figure out what part of the circuit it is.
EDIT, that resistor link you cut out, that appears to be a factory fitted setup. Might want to check what it is as it's probably there for a reason.

How do you do it? Find this stuff. I sure owe you. I cannot thank you enough for your input.GDII wrote:What colour wire does the pink one plug into? The wiring diagram doesn't show the wire colours on the motor itself, just to the plugs from the body harness.

Wonder why they made that change. I guess it has to be something to correct or adjust a reading in one of the control ECU's.
Will do some more digging around in there tomorrow. Sounds like I can change the tops of motors over anyway.
And get back to you re what wires the pink goes to in the plug and socket connection.
I maybe able to get a retired auto sparky to play around and see what resistance is being added with that part wired back in.

Re: 1996 MR2 GT-S
Google is your friend. That's it I guess. These cars are old enough and the internet is getting very big, there is bound to be some information out there on most stuff.
All I did was search the term 'SW20 MR2 power steering pump' and trawled through images until I spotted one with the same wiring as yours. Must be a late model pump as I assume none of your early model pumps have it? Toyota don't just change part numbers for the hell of it. Told you there might be something different between them.

Re: 1996 MR2 GT-S
Back to the drawing board.
Yet another FAIL!
I must of been thrown by the pm issue and how it always seems to work after a few runs in the morning and not working.
This morning same deal 'No power steering.'
After a few errands around town! Yeh.
So will put what we now know is the factory link (fitted to the later pumps and I figure it is a resistance wire) back in, and tomorrow I will try the heat gun and warm everything up before I start the car and see what happens.
It is just so annoying.

Re: 1996 MR2 GT-S
Noisy Exhaust single outlet.
Removed, and likely for sale, complete with cross pipe from manifold.
Thanks to RobH.
I got the old exhaust from that Gen3 he wrecked.
Hell of a rattle, so we knew something was loose inside.
So a little open heart surgery was called for. This is what the issue was.
You have to love the silly bit od wire wool in it when opened up. I left the whole thing empty.
With a little bit of messing around I welded in pipes and the welded in the perforated ones back on over them, and then also added a brace so the whole is held together.
I was not up to mig welding the ground out section back in. (Note there was two layers of very thin Stainless? Not sure why they made it that way.
It did have another sheet of stainless that almost wrapped around the whole body and of thicker steel. that some one had added at sometime for some reason.
I tried a few angels on getting the patch welded back in. And was told it was not cost effective.
So went and hired Oxy Acetylene plant and welded the more sold sheet back over the hole. Messy job, but I got it done.
Fitted it up over the week end. And old cross pipe from Gen2 I just wrecked.
Just loved getting that in. Dropping subframe enough to get it in, was the only way I could see, after messing around long enough.
It was always a risk as to what sound was going to be and performance.
Sounds good in car and told the exhaust note from out side when I took it out for a drive was not a lot different! I think it has a different frequency, as no alarms were set off.
Performance! seems to have a kick when the turbo starts helping. Certainly seems to have not caused any loss of power. And the popping in the exhaust when buttoning off has gone.
I am looking at changing out the End cones to smaller ones. I would of done so while I had the gas plant, but they can wait. I wanted to get it fitted up and see if I liked the results, before spending what could of been a waste.
Strange that this large bore exhaust seems to be quieter than the smaller bore four pipe outlet, was on the gen2.

Re: 1996 MR2 GT-S
Power Steering! Next!
Pump got changed out and it worked on testing.
Next morning "No" Just the same. Does not like mornings. Well not all mornings.
Can it be the flow control valve in the rack? Somehow loading up the pump and tripping the computer?
That is the last thing to be changed. Lucky I have two spare racks.
Other than that Blue is going well, and I am now happy to drive it.
Had a magic run down to Te Puke the other weekend. 450ks round trip and got out this end feeling great.
Some great roads. Loved the drive up over the Kaimai Range. Very low traffic on my way up going down. So was able to throw it around the excellent twisty turns.
The run back had it's moments. Rain over the Kaimai's (Sad) and traffic (Sad) and rain from just South of the Bombays home and Auckland traffic. Puk.
Looking at a new project. Motorised Drift Trike.
I understand there were some at the Speed Show in Auckland. And there will be some at Chrome. There is a chance they will be available to test ride. I cannot confirm yet.
For those who have no idea of what I am talking about. Ask Fanga Dan, as he should have his own very soon. I see it was almost built when I was down at Te Puke. Apparently he could not stop smiling and saying how much fun he had ridding one at Speed Show. I also know the Link Computer one was being ridden around at least one of the pavilions at the show. SkidSkateSlide Mike Linstrom Builder. I am trying to get a new group up and running on Facebook. Motorised Drift Trikes (NZ). And hope to sort some events here in Auckland, some time down the track.

The one at Speed Show was awesome. Nearly the most fun you can have with ya pants on . There was even a Sachs Rotary one there. The 200c c Honda ones and the one on the link stand rock. See should have been there

In my experience it's been the electronic box that's buried behind all the alloy aircon pipes in the back passenger side corner of the frunk. I think from memory it was behind some other wee box of tricks. See my Rides thread for details (use the forum's Advanced Search for a post in Rides section by me about power steering)

This S/W is the controller that will switch out the pump if steering wheel is not moved for so many mins,.
I had one MR2 that never even had one of these. But cannot confirm if P/S worked or not.
My thinking was that as power steering pump starts at S/W on then defaults. I do not think this should effect it.
This fault is either no power steering pump or works. but after it fails can only be reset by switching Ign,. off and back on.
