Re: Zimmo's 1991 2GRFE project
Welcome. Nice car you had and now have.
People say that they handle horrid because they don't know how to drive them. Driving these cars needs a different driving style. Smooth and gentle is where it's at unless it's Autocross. You have a 91 which has the 'twitchy' handling unless the rear subframe has been changed to the later model. They handle well until you brake incorrectly into a corner and the back end lets go. But yes, they do handle like they are on rails. What suspension mods have been done? It doesn't look stock.

Hi thanks for the replies, don't think the subframe has been swapped but its got full XYZ coilovers and 6pot fronts on 330mm discs and rear has the rx8 front discs. And an 2GRFE engine.
Well the Mazda was a much faster car than the MR2 but first 2 seater MR car, very fun.

Re: Zimmo's 1991 2GRFE project
Cool, as far as I know there are less than 10 MR2's in NZ that have a 2GRFE installed. That car nearly fooled me with it's clear front lights and Gen 3 rear lights (the Gen 1 front bumper gave it away). That Mazda must have been a pretty fast one if you think the MR2 is slow.

Re: Zimmo's 1991 2GRFE project
@JasonFriday13 Yeah I was thinking of swapping the bumper but I actually prefer the Gen 1 one. The Mazda was around 230kw atw and surprised a number of cars, next step was an even bigger turbo like a GTX3076 for it but its fail wheel drive so I didn't see the point (stock block is good for up to 300kw with a nice tune). Only around 10 2GR's wow, but I see why as its not the cheapest swap in the world.
Actually the swap is happening now just need the wiring done. And then waiting for Gouky to release his supercharger kit.

Very nice looking cars. Not a fan of the deleted rear spoiler but paintwork is really amazing. Would like to see some interior and engine pics when its complete.

Many an argument between me and my friends about the spoiler delete, seems it's a love or hate thing

Hi welcome to the forum.
I have to look up what engine you have fitted, as I am old and have very few clues about this.
I would be keen to find out about respray. As Blue needs one.
Certainly will be talking to that paint shop. Your paint job looks super.
Strange yours is blue, as I also see one on Sunday and there cannot be many of these in New Zealand, let alone in Auckland.

Re: Zimmo's 1991 2GRFE project
His one is green, not blue.
I'm sure the paint job is very well done but I'd go seeking examples of their work or even viewing this car and checking it closely. Not saying these guys can't do a good job, but then the price of a paint job can be where the quality usually lies.
Photos can easily hide imperfections and mistakes or lazy masking. My car hasn't been fully resprayed but in photos it's very hard to tell where the paint on some of the resprayed panels is subpar quality.
The engine in his car is a 3.5l V6 from any one of the following cars. Aurion, Estima, Rav 4. It could even be from a Blade or at a stretch, a Lotus Evora

It wasn't meant to come across that way. I'll pick my words better next time. I apologize if I've made someone feel unwelcome.

Re: Zimmo's 1991 2GRFE project
Haha it's ok I'm not upset at all and I would welcome inspections of the car, my car by no means his best work but for the money I paid I believe I got a very good job. In real life it also looks good. But i am biased :p
Yes the engine is out of a 2006 nz new Aurion. I am hoping to run a link g4 extreme but will discuss that with the new sparky in the next few weeks.
If the car is not fast enough then I'll try Goukys supercharger kit.
Really looking forward to meeting people and seeing what others have done to their cars.

I like the black primer so if I get a stone chip it shouldn't be so noticeable
