Re: My 1990 SW20 MR2 GT, DIY/Build/Repairs
Good News.
The head unit is now working.
It was the earth that was stopping it going still. I earthed it directly to the metal work in the dash and it powers up fine.
I did look at hooking up the ACC +12v to the Ciggie lighter, however that was showing 5v with the key off and 12v with it on, which to me isn't right, I thought that there should be no power at all to that wire when the key removed from the ignition.
So I have to manually turn the headunit on and off at the moment and currently I only have audio from the Passenger side Left Front and Rear and Drivers side Rear, which isn't surprising.
I still need to install the shifter boot properly.

Re: My 1990 SW20 MR2 GT, DIY/Build/Repairs
I took the drivers side door panel off, original speaker resides there, was pretty well stuck to the door, but broke it free and found that someone has manually soldered wires to it.
Neither this speaker or the tweeter are playing audio at all. ( the rear speaker is on that side though).
I'm not 100% convinced that the wiring to the door is broken, as my multimeter showed 3.9 ohms, although i'm not sure this means the wiring is working.
It could be a wiring configuration issue, so further testing is needed. the RCA connectors were wrongly labelled and I had to swap front to rear connectors to get the correct fader control, so maybe something else is wrong too.

That's good it's working but annoying it's not working as it should.
The speakers are meant to be stuck to the surrounding plates. To remove them you should take off the outside plate with the speaker in it.

Try take a reading from the harness end and that will tell you if you have continuity to your speaker.

All you've done is measured across the speaker and not actually checked the HU <-> speaker wiring. 3.9ohms is right but it's never a speaker coil failure.

Yeah, i remembered about an hour after the end, i usually get reminders from trademe an hour before, but I must have had that turned off, but they have some more i'm keeping an eye on now which I like, just 17x7 and 17x8 +35, but might go cheap, so will see what happensAlsw20 wrote:Did you miss the end of the auction for those wheels ?

Re: My 1990 SW20 MR2 GT, DIY/Build/Repairs
Today I changed the gearbox oil, using Redline MT-90 and what Mitre 10's staff thought was a Beer Bong (Funnel and Hose)
The old oil didn't look too bad draining out, but changed my mind once I saw it in the oil drain tray, it only seemed to have 3L in it too, filled back up and it took around 3.6L ish.
I also removed the window wipers and scuttle to lubricate the wiper assembly underneath, as it was making a horrible noise when using window wipers.

Re: My 1990 SW20 MR2 GT, DIY/Build/Repairs
I also re-attached the missing trim piece from the drivers door, yep the car needs a clean, but its pointless as it gets covered in pollen within an Hour or so.
Next week 4 new tyres are going on the car, I checked the date codes on the current tyres and the newest ones are 14 years old.
I ordered 4x Nexen CP661's in stock 195/60/14 and 205/60/14 size, yes, these are just cheap tyres, but you really can't get anything decent for the stock 14inch rims anyway.
After reading this http://www.thedrive.com/opinion/5189/th ... atal-crash and the MR2 being the dangerous 1990 model prone to snap over steer (and me being a bit of a hoon) I thought I had better at least have some new rubber rather than using perished old tyres. For now I have given up on finding some other wheels.
One annoying thing is that one of the factory wheels on the front is a 14x6 instead of 14x7, so I will have to use the spare wheel which happens to be a factory 14x6, but this one is not painted to match the rest of them.
I have ordered some Mat Black Plasti DIP cans and might have a go and spraying the wheels with that next week.
I have a boost gauge coming (45mm) that I can install in the factory location, along with a fuel cut defender that I will set to 17psi and a manual boost controller that I will adjust to 14-15psi (Full throttle in 4th gear).

Fronts are supposed to be 14x6, rears are 14x7.

Yeah, which is why its annoying that the front left is 14x7 instead of 14x6 like the one on the right, as you can tell the left one sits out further, not ideal.. which is why i'm going to use my spare 14x6 and paint itAlsw20 wrote:Fronts are supposed to be 14x6, rears are 14x7.

Re: My 1990 SW20 MR2 GT, DIY/Build/Repairs
Tried some 1/4 mile runs today at the track, but only had 3x attempts, as they kept messing around and delaying the racing due to the hint of moisture in the air..
First run, no ticket or time, the printer wasn't working.
2nd Run, average launch, 14.8 ish at 95.something MPH.
3rd Run, bad launch, 15.1 at 93 mph (this run I tried taking it to redline in each gear) which is pointless with the CT-26 turbo.
Was going to hang around and do more, but it was already 2pm and I had only had 3 runs since arriving at 9:30am and was over it.
Still need to install my boost gauge and set the boost, may have been running less than stock boost today, as I disabled the T/VSV and only had the boost turned up a tiny bit on the manual ball and spring controller.

Some days can go like that depending on how well the organisation is and weather holds out. Keep it up and the times will come down and enjoyment up.
