Depends on the car, but Jim is right. SW20 flywheel bolts are all high tensile, so they can be reused again (I have on a few of my engines). My mum's Toyota Vitz uses standard bolts and they must be replaced every time.Benckj wrote:Its not the torque setting its depends on if they a Stretch To Yield like head bolts. Re: Olaf's 1992 GT-Limited Round 2
Engine is out! Alternator and head are off to specialists on the mechanics side of networking, where as I'm taking the gearbox and LSD to one of my local garages to create the LSD gearbox I've always wanted!
Clutch and flywheel are toast, flywheel is fine to be machined, clutch was down to metal. Good thing I've gone new!
My mechanic has fast tracked the progress greatly. No point messing around, he just gets right onto it!

Your clutch plate still looks like it has some meat left. What about the other side where is contacts the pressure plate?

Didn't grab a look Phil was in a bit of a rush, wasn't a factory clutch though Russ says the new one will be much better all round
Dumbass that I am, lost the little speedo key that Colin (84vvt) made for me - Toyota sells them though and I've grabbed another. Sorry Colin - I'll have to build you a computer that you can overheat or something
Gearbox and LSD are now at TMS in Kapiti, guy working on it worked at Welly automotive gearbox specialists for 4 years and he sounded keen to do the change and said it would be too easy! Always a good sign

That head gasket looks a little worse for wear. What are you replacing with?
Glad to see your ripping right into the re-build. Did you order a full gasket kit from Toyota?
This is my gen 3 kit which was under $300 delivered.

Glad you got the kit. Its good value when you consider its all OEM and the HG alone would set you back $150+.
One hint, the kit may or may not contain the oil pump shaft and outer ring seal. From the diagram it should have these so tell your friendly parts man and they will generally supply for free. These are known weak points so make sure you replace both seals.

Re: Olaf's 1992 GT-Limited Round 2
Redline Mt-90 is on the way. Gearbox is still in progress - wrong bearings keep being sent to the guy, told him to ask for 89-91 turbo mr2 bits but who knows, and told him he should make sure Toyota can't help him (not sure what supplier he's using). Head and alternator is done. Waiting on gearbox then all the big work is done. It'll then be all put back together!

Re: Olaf's 1992 GT-Limited Round 2
Double check that coolant. Long life stuff is normally bad for older cars especially ours which has a copper(?) radiator, brass heater pipes and copper or brass(can't remember) heater core. OAT coolants are corrosive to brass and copper(bad unless you like coolant leaking). In addition newer coolants are designed to last longer because they are designed for all or mostly aluminium systems which corrode a lot less quickly than steel or iron systems. Also if you do switch from 'green' to 'red' make sure you flush the system out because they can react with each other. You're better off changing it every 2 years(typical lifespan of the corrosion inhibitors of 'green' coolant)

Re: Olaf's 1992 GT-Limited Round 2
Agreed. Green does react with red, I've had to do a full flush out once when I switched coolant colours. I don't think Toyota coolant was much more expensive last time I bought some.

Not heaps to report, every part is done, LSD is in Gearbox and has been changed from 2 way to 1.5 way. Engine and gearbox is all back together. Just needs to be put back into the empty engine bay!

Re: Olaf's 1992 GT-Limited Round 2
And it's done! As it's heavily modded there are still a few issues but I'll get around to those. Brian joined me for a convoy by pure randomness and coincidence on my way home from Newtown till he got off at Plimmerton too, which was cool!
The speedo stopped working halfway through the trip back home - Russell had to modify the speed adapter pin as it was only right on one end. It may be this I need to take another look at, for now I'm using GPS on my phone for speed. There is no oil light at all, so something gone wrong there. Also getting an occasional check engine light, possibly related to either the speed signal being lost or the oil light, or even something else. I notice that the throttle cable is coming out of the curvy metal piece it sits in when under full pull, then it kind of rubs on it as it goes to sit back in it, is this going to damage my cable?
Clutch is perfectly awesome now, all gears are awesome (go redline mt-90!!), LSD is literally kick arse, very tight, it almost feels like a locky going around tight corners. Aside from needing to get the air bubbles out of the system, no more water use!! And lots of blue
So again, a bit of TLC needed for the minor stuff but I think this car will always need it, being that half the parts are after market. But happy I can just go out and take it for a drive now without worrying about anything!

Re: Olaf's 1992 GT-Limited Round 2
Very nice, in regards to the throttle cable yes it can damage the cable over time, well at least that's what happened on another car of mine the cable frayed and jammed. When I used GPS on my phone I found it to be ok at detecting speed compared to my speedo but have you tested it with someone driving 50 and seeing what the GPS readout is saying? Guess there is a margin of error on all cars with their speed readout but will be interesting to see how accurate it is.
