Freshly imported '92 GT-S
Hi guys
Seeing as i've been spamming a few of you in the parts section I thought i should introduce myself.
Im Andy and this is my wifes lil Rocket; she loves the SW20 to bits and she is enjoying taking her to the odd trackday.
Goal is around 300-350hp; concentrate on handling and braking.
We have a couple of other JDM classics in the stable but the SW20 is a car we both always wanted.
The car was imported last year, very tidy and only 89,000kms. We were looking at '90's cars as thats what we like and the MR2 was the most fun and best looking we reckon. We bought the car a few weeks back.
Came with:
Trust intercooler kit
Rusty Apexi 2.5 inch exhaust
HKS EVC III
Rose jointed front suspension arms
HKS air filter
Since then:
BC gold coil overs
Custom catch can
FGK 3 inch exhaust
Future goals:
Blitz access ECU (will get it checked on a dyno to make sure it isnt going to blow up)
De-cat and CT20b
Maybe fit a Link and go E85 for easy HP (its dont wonders with my Skyline)
Wider wheels and trackday orientated rubber
Project Mu brake pads
Hope to join the club soon but sadly an elderly man backed into the LH door so i'm searching for a replacement as wreckers have so far sent junk to my panel beater and we believe the car is worth maintaining to a high standard. If anyone has a LH door please hit me up!

Nice car. I've always found black to be a nice colour for the Mr2s. I'll be interested to see the progress that you have on this! How are the BC Golds treating you?

Great looking car with very low KMs. Welcome to the forum. There is lots of information on here and many knowledgeable people. Become a club member and you can use the search function.
Looks like you have some good plans for it.

Re: Freshly imported '92 GT-S
Thanks guys, we do really enjoy the car. Might have found a good door from a wrecker in Taranaki tonight too so looking forward to getting her back!
BC golds ride very well and not too bouncy or firm. We took the car to Hampton Downs 3 weeks ago and I found the limits of Chinese tires haha. The importer has put 215 wide tires on the back so the car was going sideways in 4th gear which was frightening. I dont think its got the LSD option as its hard to catch when it starts wagging the tail but 235 or 245 wide rubber should settle it down enough.
We both enjoy the challenge of a mid-ship car as the handling is so different to F-R cars.
Quite stoked to see the MR2 club and community is very active; helps that the MR2 doesnt attract the drift crowd haha

The '92 GT-S should have a factory E153 LSD transmission. You'll be able to tell what transmission it has by the plate in the frunk.RH9 wrote:Thanks guys, we do really enjoy the car. Might have found a good door from a wrecker in Taranaki tonight too so looking forward to getting her back!

Very nice car indeed. Those are big power goals (to me at least). I'd like a similar amount of power, but I've got a standard ECU. How much did it cost all up once it was landed, complied and all the rest?

Re: Freshly imported '92 GT-S
Wow. We need to get you parked next to Mr Shiny.
Hey what size are those rims? Though I see you have your eyes on Chris' old ones if they're still available form Clive...
For good road tyres with tons of wet grip I'll always recommend Potenzas. If you can't get them in the right size, maybe try Toyo T1R.
Whatever you do be sure to fit the same kind of tyre front and back and wider on the back by at least 10%. Unless you like traveling backwards.
Track semis... dunno, I loved Potenza RE11 but try getting those now... They were truly epic things.
I've heard from the 2K Cup guys that Direzzas are pretty good on track. No idea what they are like on the road in the wet though.
As for the handling being different - yep. All braking before a corner, gently accelerate all the way through the corner if possible. If the back feels unsettled, add a little more power. Do not lift off or brake while in a corner if possible. It's all about throttle control and being smooth.
And be sure to run the right wheel alignment. Absolutely crucial. Again it's very different to most other cars. Set it up with the maximum toe in on the rear if you want to really push it around corners.
Look forward to seeing you guys on a run. See if you can drag Chris out too. He can always ride shotgun with someone. There's always a spare seat somewhere.

100+ MR2OCNZ runs and counting... When going hard, good rubber's your best protection against unwanted accidents. Buy good tyres!

Re: Freshly imported '92 GT-S
Thanks for the info mate, it does seem completely different to a regular RWD car but I thin it takes more skill to drive an MR2 flat out. Those NA ones in the 2k cup seem to do well so im a firm believer the chassis is a good one! I'm thinking Advan AD08R's as they are a good street legal trackday tire. At the moment i'll put some wider tires on the 16's unless a nice set of 17's jumps out from somewhere. Already had a kind member offer me some so will give them some thought.mickeyduck wrote:Wow. Ahhhh, is it like other Toyota's where the LSD is an "A" rather than a "B" or something? I'll take a look.DravidDavid wrote:The '92 GT-S should have a factory E153 LSD transmission. We bought the car from a random and quite obscure dealer. He obviously liked MR2's or he wouldn't have brought it in. Being a 24yr old car I thought hmmm, if the engine sounds and the oil and coolant look clean then chances are its a legit 89kms. It started and ran beautifully and drove very straight. Obviously a looked after car. We paid $9k for it which I guess is a lot but it really is so original aside from a small repair it had around the fuel filler. Dealer told us it had a dent when it came over. Underneath is all like new and no oil leaks. I just love cars from the 90's..........I really don't like modern cars.

Re: Freshly imported '92 GT-S
I think LSDs were optional in the early turbo cars but your built plate should tell you if it had an LSD when it left the factory. Who knows what's been done in the 24 years since.

Re: Freshly imported '92 GT-S
How to identify if the gearbox has an LSD:
Look on the manufacturers plate in the front trunk, and look at the gearbox section.
E153-734 is open diff
E153-735 is LSD
Hope that helps.

Re: Freshly imported '92 GT-S
Thanks for the info, quite different to the slightly newer Toyota's then in the way they denote LSD equipped.
Yeap my wife works in Wairau so its normally daily driven. She's missing the car like crazy but managed to secure a replacement LH door today......hooooraaay!!
Should be back next week sometime
I miss this lil Rocket too; its a shape that makes me smile every time I see it.
