My First MR2
This is my 1987 Toyota MR2. This was previously Christians car and I've had it about 2 months and am absolutely loving it, My dad has a 1994 Turbo so it goes good next to that I have given it a good detail, installed a short shift kit fixed the window gear. I still need to fix the Radiator fans as they don't work. Still need to join the club and I'm looking forward to coming on some of the runs

Re: My First MR2
Beautiful car for your first car. My first car was a MK5 Cortina for $400 as my parents didn't let me have a fast car (possibly a good thing as I took out a power pole with the Ford) so I'm jealous.

Re: My First MR2
My first car was an 850cc Mini with sliding side windows. Yellow, Goodbye Pork Pie. But that's so long ago I can't even remember what year the car was built. I owned it in 1982.
Your Dad needs to come on a run or two, as do you...
Regards things like installing a short shift kit... be sure to always keep the original parts. Just stash them away. Then if you ever sell the car you can either put it back to original (and get more money for it) and sell the after-market parts as extras... or sell the lot as is for more than you'd otherwise get for a messed-with car (forgive the expressions but that's what purists will say if they are looking for a nice example of a classic car).
Regards the radiator fans... they likely need a new sender unit on the bottom of the radiator, passenger side. Meanwhile simply disconnect the thing and that will make the fans go full time. That said if both fans go full time the car will never warm up right and will run too rich, so as well as disconnecting the sender unit, also pull the fuse labelled "CDS Fan". What you'll end up with is the drivers' side radiator fan going all the time but the other fan not running. This will mean the car will run slightly rich all the time with a wee bit more of a gas bill, but it won't overheat (fastest way to kill any engine) and it'll run quite well.
Or - get a sender for the radiator, fit that and see how you go.
BUT if you do so, read the BGB (Big Green Book aka factory manual) regards the coolant bleeding procedure before you fit the sender because if you don't bleed the coolant correctly you WILL overheat and kill the engine. The single most common cause of death of an AW11 MR2, along with poor choice of tyres and not being garaged (rust).
BGB is in the Members' area of the forum in a special tech thread. (Hey there's gotta be benefits for spending $30 on membership, right?)
Again, congrats on scoring Christian's AW. Nice score.
Good score Aidan! That's a fine AW. Look after it - keep it out of the rain as best you can and perhaps think of it as something you'd still like to own in 20 years' time. Trust me it'd be worth while.Aidan.robson wrote:This is my 1987 Toyota MR2. Re: My First MR2
Update on the radiator fans. I tried unplugging the sender unit and that didn't work. I've had a electrition look over it and he's said it's something in the wiring (it is pretty bad). I replaced all but 1 fuse and they still didn't work, And then I replaced the one remaining and now they work constantly with the sender plugged in, which I'm happy with for the moment (perfectly drivable not too cool although I will do what you've said with only one fan going) I might have to try replacing the sender to see if that works. Sadly my Mini and dads F-Type have priority over my AW in the garage. Plan is to build and extension then have my cars in the garage that is currently a extra room (previous owner of the house did that. Put a wall behind the garage door) I do have another set of wheels planned for it that I test fitted the other day and man they looked incredible. They only come in 15x8s, would you recommend that? Car currently has 195s on the front and 205s on the rear (Christian put those on) Bridgestone RE002s and the handling is amazing. I did the fuel pump the other week (old one died on me) and man I would rather have lit the dam thing on fire half way putting the tank back in hahaha. Other than that the car has been super reliable and so much more fun to drive in the corners than dads SW20 and I plan on getting a boost up pulley in the near future to make it a tad faster. Before that I'd like to try some EBC Yellow stuff pads as I feel like the brakes aren't quite as good as I'd like them to be. I've put about 3,000ks on it in 4 months or so and it's an amazing car to drive. Only ever seen one other AW while driving around in it, Gets lots of looks (Not as many as the mini though lol)mickeyduck wrote:My first car was an 850cc Mini with sliding side windows. As for pads, try Znoelli 500 series with TRD fluid (by Motul) available from Nick at North Shore Toyota.
And let me know if you ever plan on selling the mags you have now.
