Good work. I looked at that pump a few years ago when mine crapped out. Didn’t find many reviews on it at the time. Hope to hear how well it goes and final installation on hanger with inlet sock attached.

We did have to modify the rubber base isolator a little bit to fit the hanger as they are a little different but that's the case with the Walbro stuff too. Universal fitting kits are always like that and no-one makes a specific MR2 one.

Other than that it's just the same. Fit the filter on the base, clip it in place and trim the supplied hose to fit. Very easy once the tank is out.

Thanks, Phil did an awesome job yesterday morning and we are hoping that this pump will help when do an E85 tune.

Phil, great work mate and thanks again for everything you have done so far. Appreciate this very much and the highlight for me was was reading to your son. He was definitely into the diggers, excavators and the bulldozers :D :D :D

The other highlight for me was having a first ever drive of an MR2, thank you for letting me drive your car. It felt really good and I appreciate your tips on how to drive an MR2. The MR2 is a very different beast to my Subi. I will have to remember to switch between the 2 modes when I go from mid-engine to all 4 wheel drive

Hope I made your day when I went looking for the 6th gear :P :P :P , just an automatic thing as I had driven my Subi the day before after nearly 7 weeks of hibernating in the garage.

Lots more to do and I am hoping the nitrile sleeves turn up this week and I can close and install the fuel tank this weekend.

Yeah I look over and you were trying to yank it into reverse at 80kph   And catching you changing gear mid corner, trying to kill us both!!  Not that you were driving it beyond normal speeds. It's just funny to see non MR2 drivers drive these things.

Glad you enjoyed the drive. You will get your 6 gears for your one. Sadly this is currently an S54 5 speed straight out of 1989!

Re: Supercharged 2GR SW20 Project - Replacement Fuel Tank

Post by lasersooby »

Luckily, we decided to ensure that the fuel tank that we were installing in the car was in good condition. Sadly, this turned out to be a bit of nightmare and I uploaded some pictures of the inside of the Tank earlier on Page 19 of this thread. This was not going to be an issue as I had a complete donor car, this also turned out to be a lemon. Both tanks had a lot of rust and I picked one of them to see if I could fix it somehow.

I also spoke to FieldAir Engineering as they have some very good options to clean the aircraft fuel tanks, but they decided they could not risk it because of the plastic baffle in the tank where the fuel pump sits in.

Next thing was to try using laundry powder mixed in water and electrolysis. The Tank was setup and the process began, update on how it turned out after 72hours of treatment:

We still could not get it clean enough, rust spots on the inside all round and the top of the tank on the inside was still pretty rank. We ended up partially filling the tank and rolling it around for like 8 hours, but no joy:

This is the electrode at the start of the process and the end, voltage used was 12V using a C-Tek charger:

The search for a new tank began. Had numerous offers come through including free offers as well. I want to thank everyone that offered me a fuel tank because of the lockdown and restrictions, we just could not make it happen. Was watching for sale section on Facebook and found a person advertising parts for sale out of a complete SW20 located in Christchurch.
Contact Tom Denton and the rest is history. Bought an incredibly clean fuel tank together with a few other items. Immense thanks to Tom for packing it up for me and send through to Palmy with Mainfreight. He still has some parts for sale, I recommend him as a seller, great guy to deal with: Pictures of the tank that I bought from Tom:

Re: Supercharged 2GR SW20 Project - Fuel Pump Install

Post by lasersooby »

Once the new Tank was sorted, cleaned etc. the job of installing the Fuel Pump went ahead. This is the pump that Phil upgraded the wiring with the DW300 pump. Fuel pump information is on Page 26.
We also installed the nitrile sleeve to dampen any noise out of the high volume pump. Anyone attempting the wiring upgrade using MSEL bulkhead fittings, the diameter of hole to drill to ensure proper isolation is 8mm:

Once the pump was in, we cleaned the outside of the tank (was reasonably clean to start off with) ready to install in the car. The heater pipes were installed first. We removed some of the tabs and used rubber lined P-Clamps:

Had the intercooler modified by having AN fittings welded so that we can use proper AN fittings with the hoses and not just rely on hose clips etc:

Re: Supercharged 2GR SW20 Project - Left Hand Door Mechanism Install

Post by lasersooby »

Things are moving along slowly but in the right direction, decided to set up the locking mechanism and the door glass etc. in the left door. Pays to read the instructions on dis-assembly as that helps immensely :D
Got the sound deadening material installed as well, did not bother doing the whole door but enough to ensure the noise is reduced and also bit of help with the speakers that will be going in the doors.
Glass cleaned and install took the longest, adjustments were easy as.
Thanks to GDII, advised on the best way to get the glass motor working to help with the install.

Re: Supercharged 2GR SW20 Project - 20mm Wheel Spacers

Post by lasersooby »

Since we have committed to running 18x9s at the front and 18x9.5s at the rear, we purchased the largest allowable wheel spacer and will adjust this spacer accordingly once we get the wheels.
Wheels we are going for are the Yokohama Advan GT Premium Version Dark Bronze Metallic, we are in the process of getting the order finalized for correct spec'd rims

Finished off the connection to the fuel tank and also installed the heatshield.
Amazing the uses for the clothesline :D
Cleaned up the heatshield then used heat resistant engine block aluminum paint and for the tube, used the heat resistant engine block flat black paint.
